anyone running an msd btm
Has anyone installed one of these before? It came out of an fmax kit and it essentially has 4 wires that I need to hook up. I just emailed the techs at msd and they said that I need to buy another one of their units in order to hook it up. Is this just a ploy for me to buy one of their products or can I hook it up with out the msd 6a? The tech said that I have to use one of two different units in order for it to work. Is this true? I was under the impression that I could use this independently of any other unit. Just hook it up to the stock coil and that's it.
your prob gonna need an external box for it . . .sorry to say .
it was like that when i wanted to buy a mastermind for my nitrous , i had to have an external high output igniton to power the thing i guess. i know people that needed a certain igniton unit to power their moster tachs in their VW's , now thats some crazy **** . i think they all work together to make us spend more money.

That's pretty stupid, considering that I was advised that all I would need to do is hook it up to my coil. With the 4 wires there is a positive, ground and then two other wires. One yellow and the other white. I am certain that these hook up to the coil, but I really don't understand why I would need the other unit MSD SCI P/N 6300 or MSD 6A P/N 6200. does anyone else know if I really need either of these units in conjuction with the btm? Thanks again guys. Oh yah, those two units are what the msd tech suggested that I get.
prob becuase of the amount of signal your gonna get form the amplified aftermarket igniton rather than the stock stuff.
im assuming with past experiences , i could be wrong though.

My friend has an MSD BTM and it came with a little control device that lets you turn a **** to control how many degrees of retard you get per pound of boost... this is most likely what you're missing.

Nope, I have the **** as well, it's just that the tech said that I need another unit like the msd 6a or something like that, in conjunction with my btm.

What I have is the little red box (P/N 8762) and the ****. I was told by another member that I could use this by itself. It comes with the fmax kit. Right now, I have it mounted in my engine bay and the **** controller is in the cabin. It basically has 4 wires, red, black, white and yellow. So why would I need another unit like the 6a? Thanks again guys.
i couldn't figure out what part # 8762 was (couldn't find it on their web page) but you i believe need an ignition such as the MSD 6AL or MSD 6BTM etc etc etc
I'm not quite sure what this little box you have does.. does it have a vacuum port on it? I think i might be confused

I'm running something similar to the msd btm, but its the crane hi-6 with timing control..i think they work about the same.. I'm not sure if your running a external coil or not, but if you are..your gonna need the cap convertor..
Here's what you do, connect the constant and ground, then take the dist. cap off and look for the two wires that come from a factory harness. Cut those wires and replace the connection with those coming out of tht msd, the factory wiring will no longer be utilized.
