Default So why does everyone hate MSD?

Honestly all i hear on this site is how people have countless problems with MSD, but in the domestic world people love their products and swear by them...

I understand this doesnt really belong in FI but this is really where i hear a lot of bitching about it, and really the only place i come to on HT.

So if we could keep this on a pure technical route that would be great, first hand expierence is a must when it comes to a thread like this.

Please post the product from MSD that you have/are using and your expierence. Ofcourse if the product failed, why and how would be the main thing i am wondering about.

Alot of the threads I saw said they were hit or miss. They were compared to the SSAutoChrome ones, some work, and some don't.

I run the wires, cap, and blaster ss coil. I've never had any issues. I've had them on for around 4-5 months.

Are you serious? 30 more whp without any change!?!? I just purchased a 6al box and plan to run it on my turbo setup. I really only want it for the 2-step feature. Did you buy the box new used? What exactly was the problem?

last year i ran a 6al, cap, wires, 2 step, blaster ss coil, and a dial rpm module.
for som reason the coil crapped out on me, but it was 5 years old. this year i am taking out the 2 step because of hondata launch control, and changing the blaster ss to the HVCII coil. need more heat thats all.

the only first hand junk i have seen from MSD for some reason is the dizzies. dont know why, everyone i have seen, has taken a ****. in some way or another, or just caused problems.

so other than the dizzies, i have had no issues in 5 years on my honda.

Are you still using the HVC coil with the 6al or just the coil now?

I have the MSD 6A and bought it used. It must have something wrong with it.

I installed the MSD blaster SS coil and MSD cap and rotor at the same time and all were new. I rewired to keep the MSD coil wired with the OEM ignitor and it has been awesome. I have had it for about 20K miles and 2 years.

Buying something used and having it crap out does not deter me from using MSD in the future. If it was bought new, then I might think something else.

I have worked with msd boxes on domestics for a lot of years. There aren't any experienced stock car racers that don't have at least one spare in the trailer. It wasn't uncommon for me to have eight or ten questionable boxes at the end of the season to send to msd to have checked.Usually only one or two came back as OK. Any time the car was "off" the box got switched. Our engine dyno had one wired into the panel and that got changed every year.

When we use msd in any of our race boats we use a "redundant" system with two boxes and two coils. Sometimes they last a season, sometimes you put a new box in every couple races.

What were people using before M&W was introduced?
I guess you were having some serious problems, I used the 7al with the HVC 2 coil since 2004 with the same cap and rotor and dizzy, never had a problem. Just changed the cap and rotor.

I have been running a 6A Box, Blaster Cap, Blaster SS Coil and 8.5mm wires for a year now w/ no problems. I mounted the box inside the car to protect it from underhood heat.

i was talking about the 2step not the whole system... chrome works perfect i used it on my first setup.. but the 2step is just simple fuel cut cant make much boost at all... same with s200

the 2 step on s300 is liek the msd pulls igniiton and adds fuel

I am currently running their SCI ignition box, blaster ss coil, pro-cap, and their wire set and I have zero complaints. I have been running them for about a year now.

hmm so msd is garbage? wonder why the world's fastest fwd honda uses a msd box? Maybe it cause everyone buys the cheap msd boxes, and just assumes they're all junk.

ive got a 6al, blaster ss, cap, rotor, wires, and start/retard(for nitrous). had it almost 5 years. 2 coils went bad, one box went bad. but i still run it. i dunno, guess im to lazy to take it off. im boosted now, and it still fires ok up to 8600 rpm at 7 lbs. but we'll see what happens on the dyno at 12-14lbs. honestly i like having a more powerful spark, but in the end i wouldnt buy the stuff again.
