Anyone ever REMOVED a blockguard?
I was stripping a B18B1 that was boosted. The guy had pretty much everything inside except sleeves. He wants 450-500hp. I'm planning to send it to Mississauga engines to be sleeved.
Much to my surprise when I pulled the head off I discovered that it had a block guard installed. I'm wondering if anyone has ever removed one of these?

Yes I suppose the machine shop can probably remove it when they go to sleeve. Something I'm very interested to see is what effect this has on the out of roundness and ballooning of the stock sleeves. The engine was run very hard at 14 PSI.

well whats going to suck is when they remove it and sleeve it you slap a crank in it and it doesnt spin because the block guard distorted the mains..good luck and try to use a slide hammer to get it out

You get in there with a carbide burr and remove the weld. You sacrifice the blockguard, but leave the block casting as intact as possible. Then slide hammer it out after the penetration of the weld is severed.

Fortunately this is not welded in. It looks like someone did bang it in with a centre punch... I don't think the bare block will fit on my mill, otherwise I would just stick in a small endmill and cut the sucker out.

Re: (hackish)
Who ever sleeves it can take care of removing it .I've sleeved a couple engines that had block guards and I just removed them when I bored the first couple sleeves out.If your going closed deck and it was welded in they would just bore it out like it wasn't there.
