Advantage to running a top mount vs. botom mount????
Im considering a new manifold, but if im gonna do it i wanna run a top mount. Is there a real advantage to running a top mount vs. a ram horn or anything like that?
Heres my setup:
And heres what im cosidering
(hope its ok i used the pic, if not i can take it down)

each manifold changes the V.E. in different ways.
the top mount will have a higher V.E. but take longer to spool your turbo
the top mount will have a lower V.E. and that less time compared to the topmount to spool the turbo

Top mounts are usually easier to get equal-length runners as well making it fully divided. They generally do spool a little slower given the small amount of reliable data out there, but then again there's proof that rear-mount setups don't change spool time much at all. It comes down to how fast you can reach the required pressure & flow to spool the turbo. More volume means a bit more time to fill it up, but you can get better velocity with the longer runners.
The biggest reason some professional racers run top mounts is because they can change the turbo far quicker. If you have v-bands on it, you can have the turbo ready to pull out before it can cool down enough to touch. So if you don't have a specific need for a top mount, don't go with one.

im still willing to bet that engine V.E. plays a role into runner length.

my reasons for running a topmount are:
!.run a bigger turbo without grinding down your block.
2. easy access to turbo, with a bottom mount you have to disassemble the turbo to bolt it to the manifold, with the top mount you clock the turbo how you want it and bolt it on.
3. run bigger downpipe easier without pain in the *** fabrication.
4. better oil return, easier to run a straight shot to the oil pan
5.when I had a ramhorn it use to touch my hood burned the paint.
6.looks sexy to have big *** turbo on top.
7 even though I don't run a filter its easier run one with driver side mounted turbos
8.easier to install and remove downpipe
9. better dipstick access( with a ramhorn I burn myself and the rubber of the didpstick}
10.did I mention maintainance and adjustment of turbo is a lot easier?
I probably can find more reasons but I'll leave it to somone else.
