Accel DFI questions
I am looking at buying a used accel dfi unit, complete with harness, sensors, software, box, etc. I have never used or seen an accel dfi, therefore never tuned with one. I have a decent knowledge about tuning, but was wondering how hard these dfi units are to tune? There is a base map with the unit which was on a 10sec turbo honda, which of course i will not be using. Besides wiring the engine for the new standalone, what other issues for installation are there? Anyone on here running one?
Thanks, Jeff

i found a used one from the partstrader for 600 bucks! complete with the wiring harness, brain, sensors, software that i got from viren! actually, i bought the dfi from Terry (TurboT) i havent seen him here lately though.
sorry forgot to add...i sold it a looong time ago! i never got my car to idle right even with full tuning..it idle like it had huge cams in it.
Accel DFI (Gen 7) is kick a$$! The drivers on Accel's DFI are able to handle more then most others. I will be running it on my daily driver! Hope to have it in 2 weeks. Lilitrix's car was freaking awesome and @ idle it felt like a stock car. Most of the Honda pro's are running Accel or Motec, while most of the rotaries are running Haltech. That's just a little survey I took, which has no meaning because who knows how good of a sample it was.
you sold it to me remember, thanks i put it in my friends 2.2 civic with 150lbs/hr ford injectors, idles like a beast at 1200 but worked out a trick to cut idle fuel pressure now at 950-1050rpm. car makes 700hp plus, bit rough there is not as much smoothing as you would find with speedpro, old dfi is still a great system and does not have 10million options that take years to fill out to make a complete program.
I am looking at getting the older DFI for my daily driver... Will my gauge cluster still work, or is it going to have to be rewired? What features and "stuff" will no longer work when I install the DFI. I plan on running it on a built b16-turbo with 30 lbs to start off.... could I have it set up for like 30 lbs for use at the track and then another setup with 15 lbs for the street? or would i have to retune every time i wanted to "switch"
What type of programming interface is used? What kind of laptop would I need to do my tuning with? Big high dollar machine running windows, or could I run it on an old 133MHz in DOS and still have the same functionality? Thanks

With the older version of dfi you can run the computer entirely in ms-dos mode, and therefore dont anything special at all in terms of a laptop. I think that you can specify a few base maps with the dfi, so therefore just switching the base map when you want to go from 15 to 30, or vise versa. I just bought a haltech brand new, and am going to experiment and see how it goes. Either haltech or dfi require extensive tuning and know how in tuning and standalone technology, def. not plug and play, and def not easy to tune for the average joe.
OK, well I think you just answered about all my questions. The only other thing I wondered was... will my gauge cluster work? I have heard that by replacing the OEM computer with a DFI I will loose my cluster, cruise, and some other things... is this true? If so, what could I do? would I be able to run BOTH computers, but only keep the OEM ecu to the needed accessories so it would therefor NOT, in essense, affect the engine at all? With a V-AFC work/be needed?
u can have everything work with the dfi... all it does it replace ur stock ecu... it takes over controlling ur motor essentially... if u wire it up right... everything will work... i know someone who is running a dfi who had p/s, cruise control... etc... the oem ecu has nothing to do with ur accesory's... and sell the afc... all the afc does is change ur fuel maps slightly... dfi controls ur entire fuel maps... starting from scratch!
I bought the E6s-8 as well. Just wondering...where did you buy yours from? I just want to make sure that the same dude didnt rip both of us off. Anyway, it is going to be awhile to i get my car up and running on the haltech. It needs to get sleeved, built and then run around till broken in. Probably by the mid summer i should undergo installation and tuning. Let me know how your install goes.
Hey boosted, the DFI 7 is awesome, I have yet to complete the tuning. We broke the flex pipe twice while tuning so we had to abort the session that night, since then I went on vacation and had the car painted so I am scheduled for a tuning session next week. But from what I have seen so far the car idles like stock, no lumpy idle, and the power delivery @ 10 PSI is just awesome ( Flex Pipe broke @ just 8 PSI with Poly Inserts installed in the Motor Mounts). I am using a MSD 6AL and I might have to go to the Digital 7 because there is a possibility that the boost might put out the flame at 25-30 PSI. I am also running 720cc RC Injectors.

You can not run the original dfi program on a lap top that has too fast a speed. The dfi can only accept data at a certain download speed from the laptop or you will get an error saying "download speed too fast cannot read". I use a real old laptop that still uses Win 3.1

Alright just checking about where you bought it from, cause i bought mine from a guy off of thepartstrader.com...thought it was kinda fishy that two ppl bought haltech units for a similar price within similar time periods. Anyway, i am doing all the installation and tuning on the unit myself. I am just going to use the flying loom harness and wire up all the GM sensors. I actually isnt that bad to do if you have made a wire harness for an engine before (had to make my own vtec harness for my b16a swap a few years ago). Do you have base maps for hondas? I just need something to crank up the engine. Keep in touch with me on here, i would love to hear how install and tuning goes for you, and since you are close (within an hour) would be great to get together after i get my hatch finally together and done. Oh, what is the deal with the Philly street races? Is there any kind of scene anymore?
