Default 9psi Update

Ok guys and gals. Here is the latest poop on my POS:
On June 6th I upgraded the boost pressure on my JRSC from 6lbs (stock) to 9lbs (not stock ) The new pulley is from Endyn and known as their "stepper" pulley. The stock injectors were upgraded from the stock 240cc to Bosch 310's or 320's customized by ISA and Dr. Injector to fit in the rail.

An Apex-i VAFC (yes I know I don't have a VTEC motor, but it works just fine and as 311 would say "...fu@k the naysayers) and a Jackson Racing BTC was also added to the mix.

Now for tuning. The first pull after the new upgrades was good for a whopping 90hp Obviously the thing was drowning in fuel. After several pulls and adjusting the timing and VAFC we were able to muster 182hp and 148lb/ft.

This is only marginally better than the 168.8hp and 137.3 we were able to extract with 6lbs. The only explanation we (ISA) can come up with is the poor little blower is just working too damn hard. The M62 would probably show better gains from an additional 3lbs of boost but the puny M45 does not like it at all. It is noticieable louder though and sounds better IMO.

Now, for everday driving and my impressions of the BTC: The tuning was obviously done at WOT on the dyno. Timing was set at stock (16 degrees) and the runs were made with only 1 click (.25 degree of retard per pound of boost) with the BTC. No detonation was heard after the first pull on the dyno. Driving around town, though, induced detonation fairly often. As long as I have my foot in it and keep the revs up detonation isn't a problem. But if I'm going up a hill under heavy load (like in a gear higher than I should be) it begins to ping.

So now I've played with the VAFC settings while driving and it has helped the detonation problems. A little more of that and maybe some timing adjustment should get rid of the knock. If I can't get rid of it completely I'll go back to 6psi. I had no problems there and the car ran flawlessly and put out respectable power for the lowly B18b.

One of my biggest problem is fuel tuning. Even with several hours on the dyno since the upgrades the fuel continues to be a problem. It would be much easier to play with if I could get the static f/p down from the 56psi with the cartech. The car was just drowning up top and is leaned out up to nearly 30% in places.

But, like with any new toys tuning is key and hopefully I can tune it out, if not I'll go back to 6psi and know that I have a reliable and relatively quick car that I'm not afraid to beat the snot out of.

Thanks (as always) to ISA (Donny and Rickie) for all their time and efforts.

Zach

Hey Zach,
Sorry to hear your problems. Why didn't you ever get rc injectors? Anyways did you run your car over the weekend? Did it do better at the track with the new re010's?

I didn't go with the RC's because these were cheaper and made in house at Dr Injector (it's a place located at ISA). I didn't run this weekend b/c I needed to catch up on some sleep and tend to stay away from import events. Too much rice and too many thugs. How about you?

IMHO, I think the best thing you could do is get the fuel pressure down, whatever way you can. Lower the rise rate on the cartech and open up the pulsewidth on the injectors more with the afc. Then retune from there.

You could lower it more, considering you have slightly larger injectors. An injector would be better off with more time open (longer pulsewidth), then lots of pressure pushing behind it.

With proper tuning, I was able to extract 183hp/164TQ from a B18b s/c @ 6psi. The difference was in the head - he was running Crower cams, valve springs, and retainers. The block was fitted with 9.1:1 JE's and Eagle rods, and balanced. The rev limiter was bumped to 8500, but only really made usable power to 8k.

Next we are moving to a Hondata stage 2 w/ boost and 440cc injectors, we expect power to increase to 190-195 wheel hp. This would be the next best step for you as well.

Was the 183 at 6psi stock or with the head and cam upgrade?

if you want you can try these settings
fuel press 50Psi @650-750 rpm W/ f/p reg vac line disconnected & plugged
with the 310's assuming these are saturated type W/VAFC & oem ecu try +1 at 1k rpm and gradually add to the higher rpms
base ign time at 16deg btdc(your setting) W/ the BTC set at 1deg
NOTE: on the VAFC do not make adjustments W/ Ne point function
try using throttle point functions only

The head was stock, aside from the cams, valve springs, and retainers. No P&P work done, stock valves, etc. 6psi was the boost pressure.

I don't feel so bad then. If cams were used to make that power then that's cool. My best dyno with 6psi was 168.8/137 with no internal work.
