98 Civic EX Vtec TURBO Question D16y8
Hey group! I have just recently installed a custom Garret T3 turbo on my 98 EX Civic. I have the exhaust, intake, and now the turbo. My question is: When we installed the turbo, everything went perfect on the installation. No problems what-so-ever, however, when we cranked her up, I got the CEL. I have the missing link already installed. the ONLY wires I had to even touch were to extend the wires running from the O2 sensor so it would reach to the new downpipe location. I had to move the harness a TAD when installing the oil feed line in the oil pressure sending unit location (right above it). I had the CEL codes ran and it was BOTH 02 sensors, and something about an "IMPROPER GEAR RATIO." and to go along with this code, my speedometer will go haywire every now and then, acting sparatically. This needs to be corrected VERY soon!! I am just curious if this could be the speed sensor going out, or a short somewhere that i'm not aware of, because like I said, we touched literally no wires on the installtion. Please advise.. thanks!

what kind of kit do you have and what kind of engine management are you running? Something is not wired in correctly is the issue. Also did you properly seal off the wires to the O2 when you extended it? If you did not, you fried the O2. if they touch at all with power on,you short the resistor assembly inside and ruin it.

Re: 98 Civic EX Vtec TURBO Question D16y8 (oscarmayer)
It is a custom kit with a Garrett T3 turbo and an intercooler that looks to be off a saab. And yes, the wires did accidentally touch the downpipe one run and burn some insulation off the wire, since then, i corrected the problem with ties and electrical tape. If it fried the O2 sensor, would i just need to replace the o2 sensor, or did it do more damage? Also, the CEL was throwing 2 codes for the o2 sensor(s). And, that is the ONLY wiring I even TOUCHED on the car, no other wires were moved, extended, even looked at wrong by me. So why is my speedo acting crazy and the "improper gear ratio" that goes hand in hand with it? That is the BIG issue, i'm not even worried about the o2 at this point because the car is running fine, other than shifting out of gear at the wrong point due to this other problem. Thanks

You have an automatic I presume?
Check your VSS sensor connection, they tend to be sensitive to moisture.

hrmm what do you have controlling your fuel system?
what gauges and sensors are you running? Something is causing a issue. Do you have an aftermarket tach?

Re: 98 Civic EX Vtec TURBO Question D16y8 (oscarmayer)
no, sadly, i haven't had a chance to upgrade my fuel system yet. I have NO aftermarket gauges, also, unfortunately, not even a boost guage YET, thats why I haven't tried tweaking the boost, its set REAL low now. Everything on the car is EXACTLY the way it was before when it was working perfectly except now it has a turbo, and oil feed line, and no air conditioner. I've got it in the shop right now getting checked out, they think it COULD be the speed sensor going out because that would cause the incorrect gear ratio engine code. I'm COMPLETELY baffled by this.
