1st time turbo user
Hey peeps, I have a custom turbo kit that i put together and i'm going to put it on in 2 weeks. I have an all stock D15b7 and i plan on running around 6 or 7 psi. I'm using an FMU, Missing Link, Intercooler and BOV of course. Should i be fine with this or do i need more? I want to be able to get enough boost to have fun and drive the way i want when i take it to the drag strip. Do i have to worry about axles snapping or blowing up my engine at low boost like 6 to 7. Please direct me

I think your axles will have no problem with 6-7 psi. Mine are holding fine at 14psi....but I also don't do like 6000rpm launches haha. I agree with civiceg500...if moneys tight then go with uderdata, if not get hondata or even AEM. You'll gain even more whp with a good tune, and its "cheap insurance" for your motor's life.

on a D series setup turbo ,,. here i shall come in and pitch some comments
u WILL snap axles on a boosted D series at the track... i did even NA when i had 121 whp
dont be hard on them... launch around 4k rpms... and shift nicely... they will hold ..
ditch the FMU at least run the hack as a worst case (it has ran fine for me )
on a stock B7 i wouldn run anymore than 6 psi...
anything more, will stress it alot and snap a rod more likely
like DUNC said.. theres many options, i just dont like the missing link /FMU deal...
theres more reliable options out there for a low psi setup

Sounds better, What do you think i should do? Would my axles be ok if they started from idle and went up in mph?

what if money is lil tight and youve kept everything under $1000 including every last nut bolt and air/fuel, boost and oil pressure gague? I have same set up but for my B20a motor (1988 prelude). Except a t3 turbo (IHI). I dont mean to jack the thread but i was curios. How hard is it to install a 'hack'and rough price range? I have 450cc injectors (blue tops) but know cant use them wait and wanted to do like civ500 just lil more power to start being 1st timer. oh and upgraded msd fuel pump.

I wouldn't make the statement that your axles WILL brake. I doubt they'll brake at all. I ran 15psi on a d16y8 with nitto 555r's at the track with 13psi of pressure in the tires. My axles took all of that, and 6 psi is more than likely never gonna touch yours. It's possible with the right torque on a launch or something, but I doubt it.

Re: 1st time turbo user (stealthmode62)
Yeah i agree, how can they break at 7 psi or so. I guess i will keep the boost at 6psi or so. Could i still use an FMU at 6psi i can't afford Hondata and things yet. What about a piggy back like Apexi or Greddy?

Re: 1st time turbo user (civiceg500)
the axles dont break unless u have massive power, or abuse them
when u go drag racing (like u said on the 1st post) u will be doing burnouts on the burnout box, and will launch quite a few times at least 4k to get the good launch..
u will snap axles doing that...
on the street u wont if u are already rolling
i have personally broken axles with Goodyear Eagle F1's and Hoosier's Slicks
a piggy back VAFC willat least be safer than a FMU + missing link no matter what anyone else says (make sure t ohave a BTM with it)

Re: 1st time turbo user (USDM 4G VTEC)
You are very wise man, thanks. Um, could you tell me more about the VAFC, shouldn't i use a SAFC because i have a non-vtec engine? How would i go about and install this and tune my engine right?

the Apexi piggy back (VAFC Hack) is one of the solutions for going turbo and it has been out for a while
its not the BEST option, but i have used it for 11 mths now and it has worked great for me
tunning capabilities are somewhat limited, since u can play with fuel just a bit without getting a code... in your case of 6 psi, i dont see it being such a big deal and u will have more room to play with
theres many other options out there as TurboEdit (OBDO management) , UberData (OBD1 management) and Hondata, AEM, etc
but in ur case, the low psi setup and low budget, the hack will be good enough until u can upgrade
the worst way u can do is the FMU missing link way , and thats so bad, i really dont recomend anyone to do it.....
for further info on the hack go here

Re: (USDM 4G VTEC)
Could i ask you another question? I've been working on cars for a long while and i'm now getting into turbos. Will i really be gaining alot more power from a turbo? I have a B7 that pushes at most 102 to the fly wheel. On good tuning, how much might i be looking at gaining from a T3 turbo at 6 psi. A ball park figure. You sound like you have been doing this a while.

Have you ever rode in a turboed honda? If not go find one, you will be hooked. Also look into http://www.ecimulti.org/uberdata It costs less than the hack and you can do it yourself. I ran the hack for a little while, until I saw the light. I would never go back.

Depending on which year of car you have, http://www.cray91.com can chip your ecu with a base map that will be better than the afc.
The afc works, but it jacks around your timing as well. Even if you don't know a thing about the afc or uberdata, let Cray chip your ecu with a proven basemap from someone running a similar setup and you will be better off than the fmu or afc.
