15w50.... when?
OK, I keep hearing great things about Mobil 1's new 15w50 oil, so I picked up a box of them at Schucks in lieu of my typical Mobil 1 10w30. Then I read some more and it seems like 15w50 is more for people running higher boost than me, I'm going to go get tuned tomorrow and will be running 10-12 PSI on my stock block b18b. Is a thicker oil like 15w50 worth it for my situation? I burn a lil oil if I drive it hard, but only if I drive hard. Your thoughts and opinions are welcome
Thanks guys

lol the part on the back that said "excellent for turbo or supercharged cars" swung me too. I've run it ever since i put my turbo on. you have nothing to lose, go with it. it's nice and thick and it doesn't seep by and burn like the thin ****! go for it.

let me just say, i put in a mix of 0w40 3bottles and 15W50 2 bottles (since winter is coming) and it is awesome. the 5w30 pours like water. The engine now is smoother, less noisy valve train and turbo still spools like a champ.
I think if you do your research you will find that mobil 1 15W50 even for our hondas is a great oil. Someone said something about our oilpumps not being able to handle the thicker oil. that is utter nonsense. show me some proof of that.
the oil pressure when cold is just a bit higher (6 bar) but warm it is about 1 bar vs 10psi with 5w30

What do you guys do about the thicker oil in the wintertime?? I thought the Mobil 10w30 was only supossed to be good down to like 20 degrees F. It gets colder than that on occassion and Im not trying to go out to my car one morning and have it not start.

One more question. You can or cannot mix oil together like this?? I know mixing differente brands of synthetic is a big no no, but what about different weights of the same brand synthertic?

Re: 15w50.... when? (ha illuminato un)
The 15 w - 50 is a goos oil for higher temperatures. Trying to keep the range closer eg 15-50 as opposed to a 5-30 means that less addatives. For colder countries a lower numer can be used. One thing to consider is bearing clearances, is the motor new, is a race motor, are the clearances tight or loose. Does the car drag or long distances. I use the red cap Mobil 1 in my street car 400whp damn good stuff. Redline oil in my race car both have given me good results. Pensoil supposedly makes a good oil also.
