Default 1/2 inch Head stud torque?

I am assembling my motor and wanted to see what people are using for torque on their 1/2 inch head studs. I was told 90ft/lbs was recommended, just wanted to double check what other people are doing. Thanks

Use whatever the manufacturer specifies. Forget what a bunch of retarded kids on H-T did, lol.

ok..... i would assume not very many people on HT are using half inch head studs, this was directed at people who probably know what they are doing. If you have used them just be like yea 90 is what i have used...... I did check the manufacter and just want a little reassurence. Thanks

which motor are they for? TQ them to 90ft and your risking f-ing up the head

huh? you will not damage the head, however it is very easy for the stud to pull the aluminum threads out of the block.

wanted to bump this up for answers on if you are talking about an ACTUAL 1/2 inch stud or you speacking of 12mm studs (which are right at .47xxx")???

I am curious because I just called ARP and 2 different people from their tech dept told me the old torque rating on the 12mm studs is 90ft lbs with moly, the new rating is 100ft lbs with moly???

That seems high, btw this is 12mm studs you would find in a h23, h22, f22, etc from arp. Something seems fishy about that, aluminum motors and 100 ft lbs seems like your gonna be ripping **** out threads.

hrm... well i wonder why they tell me so much on 12mm studs.

sorry dont mean to thread jack... just curious about that and whatnot about why they are now saying 12mm studs should be so high?

you dont have any problems with them pulling threads out on that kind of torque in an aluminum block?

I don't think they rate them at 100lb due to the block - its more to get close to the correct bolt stretch. They need a certain tension for several reasons.

In most cases, the addtional thread surface area should be enough for the extra torque. I've seen some fairly impressive things with alumnium at the place I worked at regarding thread strength.

interesting though... this would not be the first time ARP has told someone a different spec then whats on the sheet that comes with the studs.

my sheet with my studs says like 80... but the tech tells me they NEVER rated them at only 80 for the 12mm studs with moly. that old rating was 90 and new 100 with moly.

then i see this... http://www.arp-bolts.com/Catal....html

which shows 3 different torque specs for various tensile strengths... none match what arp said on either the sheet or their tech dept.
