Default "HOT ROD'S BUYERS GUIDE-PURCHASE THE RIGHT RODS THE FIRST TIME"

"Unlike clutches, pistons, rings or bearings,high-performance connecting rods are not one of the wearable components in your enging. In fact, unless some dramatic catastrophe occurs,high-performance connecting rods will generally servive multiple engine rebuilds. To maximize the return on your connecting rod investinment,I decided to give you a good education along with a buyer's guide from some of the industry's top manufactors.

Function of the conecting Rod
The connecting rod forms the critical link between the piston and the crankshaft.
all of the power generated in the cylinders only of use if it can be transferd to the crankshaft. Factory connecting rods are designed to handle the stress imposedat stock horsepower and rpm leveles.

Generating additional horsepower and revving to higher than factory rpms will create more stress and strain that the factory engineers ever intended for the factory connecting rods. Some engines have connecting rods are over-engineered and as a result moderate to significant power gains can be realized without harming the factory connecting rads.On other engines, the factory connecting rods are barely able to handle the stock horsepower and rpm levels.Honda's d-series engines are well-known to have rods that make windows in the block when anything beyond marginal power gains are made on the engine.Recently,a number of tuners have found that nissans VQ35 engine (found in the Maxima,350z and Infiniti G35) has connecting rods that will let go when more than 400 horsepower is realized at the wheels. You can find out more about your particular engine's strenghts and weaknesses by speaking with the tuners that specialize in that family of engines. For any serious performance buildup, aftermarket high-performance connecting rods should be to the top of the list.

Connecting Rod Options
Nearly all high-performance connecting rods are manufactured from high-strength 4340 steel. Some manufactors also offer titanium rods witch provide significant weight savings, but will make a serious dent in the wallet. All high-performance steel connecting rods are manufactured from either a billet or a forging.A billit is just a solid piece of material while a forging is a roughly shaped blank of the part that undergoes the forging process to have its shape.
Many engine builders prefer to use forging when available as they belive that there is additonal strength due to flow of the grain in forging. The bottom line is that either a forging or a billit connecting rod can do everything you need it to do for your application. You just need to commumincate with your connecting rod retailer or manufactor regarding the power and rpm that your combination will realize.

A-beam,H-beam,I-beam or X-beam.
Differnt rod manufactors offer differnt beam desings in their rods. Each design has its merit, but ultimately all can work well in any application as long as the correct connecting rod is selected.

Connecting rod weight will vary based on the manufactor, beam style and the use for witch the rod was designed. For the same family of engine,a manufactor may offer a lightweight and a standard weight connecting rod.The lightweight rod will generally be intended for lower horsepower applications while the standard or heavy-duty rod will be for higher horsepower applications.

CORILLO
The new Carillo connecting rod is specifically-desined for less demanding envioronments than our more recognizeable "h":beam configuration. The Pro-A part is typically lighter and employes only the standard Carrillo fastener[wmc series H-11].it is manufactured from the same parent material that has been proven in the more well known H-beam design.Due to modern machining methods, the Pro-A connecting rod requires less machine time and less detail time in manufacture.Additonally, the Pro-A will be offerd in only limited ,albeit, common part numbers.

EAGLE
Eagle ESP 3D rods aer manufactured from certified 4340 forged steel, vacume degassed to remove impurities and multi-stage heat treated. All forging are machined,x-rayed,sonic tested, magnafluxed and shot-peened to relieve stress. Each H-Beam rod features ARP2000 5/16-inch cap bolts, silicon bronze bushings,precision-aligned rod caps to eliminate cap walk and are designed for engines exceedindf 500 horsepower.
Bolt type:
5/16" ARP 2000
Recommended Stretch:
.0048"-.0052"
Torque:
28 ft. lbs.
PAUTER
The Pauter maching connecting rod beam is considerably differnt than other high-performance billit rods because they are designed specificaslly to prevent cold failure-structural brakedown. The pauter Machine rods are engineered to spread stress loads over large, uniformly shaped areas. The cross-sectional mass is critical because it controls unwanted stretch, flex and vibratory stress produced by the engine. These rods provide an excellent combation of beam stiffness, crack resistance and are lightweight. as a bonus, the streamlined beam design appreciably reduces horsepower-robbing oil windage(slinging). Each rod is manufactured from aircraft-quality,heat-treated 4340 chromoly frogings,full-coverage shotpeened,end-to-end balanced, magparticle inspected and comes complet with 220,000psi rod bolts.Applications include most popular imports and custom applications are no problem.

OLIVER RODS
Oliver Racing's exclusice parabolic beam design reduces beam stress and delivers the highest strenght-to-weight ratio. All Oliver connecting rods are precision CNC-machined using only premium aircraft quality E4340 chromoly alloy to +/- 0.0001 inch on both the jurnal and rist pin ends. The taper ,bellmouth and barrel are heald to less than 0.0001 inch. the bend and twist is limited to 0.0004-inch over the thickness of the rod, which translates to less than .004-inch over an 8 inch bar.All billets are balanced to +/-_-gm each end ,include ARP bolts and feature single or dual lube Tubes, which are precision-machined oil passages that deliver pressurized, continuous lubrication around the wrist pin bushing.Oliver produces an extremely large variety of billet connecting rods and will also produce any custom or special connecting rod to meet your specific application.

Good start for people looking for information on connecting rods. Maybe we can get some pictures of each rod. Here are pictures of B16a Manley Turbo Tuff I Beam connecting rods. I will try and dig up pictures of my Eagle H Beam connecting rods.

<Edit>
They weighed out to 596.5 grams. A little heavy but what my old friend Scott use to say "they are Manley man rods"
</Edit>

Hi-Res Pictures

They are for sale too

REV RODS
Rev Pro-Extream connecting rods are manufactured from quality 4340 steel. These Rods are designed specifially for high rpm and high boost stress levels.H-beam and I-beam designs along with ARP hardware are utilized for the ultimate clamping force.Abrons pin bushing replaces the factory pressed-fit setup.

PEAK RODS
A heavy amount of reciprocating weight is the killer amongst high rpm Hondas. You can eliminate one of these causes by switching to light weight connecting rods.Peak Performance connecting rods are specifically-designed for high rpm engines.By the time a Honda engine hits 8000 rpm,a piston will reach a tention force of 10,000 pounds per squre inch and an acceleration of 6300 g's.Strength in a rod is everything and while Peak rods are made to be light weight, they are also made to be strong. All rods are manufactured out of 4340 Chromoly and utilizing large 3/8-inch ARP 2000 rod bolts to ensure strength against breakage. To ensure proper wrist pin oiling, the rods are side-cut specifcally for honda applications.

Nice write up. I would like to make a correction for you. Im in the process of building another engine for my car. Im using the Pauters for this build. I just got off the phone with their tech dept. and the rod bolts are actually 3/8" and call for 50-55 ft/lbs tq and about .004"-.005" stretch. Im not sure if those numbers you have are generic numbers for the rods available to all cars or to a specific appication that you looked up each individual rod for. None the less GOOD THREAD!

Actually this article came directly from DSport Magazine written by Mike Ferrara.

If you would like to have the orignal article with pictures of each rod, pick up the Feb/Mar 2004 Issue of DSport Magazine.

Back Issues can be ordered from http://www.DRAGsport.com

Thanks guys!
