Yes. You can start with books or online articles.

Start with a engine management book and read it, it helps when you look at other tuned engine maps "non turbo" and "turbo" and understand how they are different, look at fuel maps and ignition advance maps, start with a non vtec engine fuel map and ignition map, then familiarize yourself with a vtec engine map

and then more reading.. and more questions and more research

It helps if you are around a tuner or have access to someone who tunes to watch how the tuner decides to do things.
Ive been doing this 2.5 years, there is still things to be learned once you know some basic rules you can start to apply this to your car... Don't take any flack from anyone and do your thing, you will start to learn it soon enough.

If you wonder how a car makes horse power see if you can get a hold of some tuning software and get a hold of a non tuned and a tuned map and look at them side by side and look at the dyno graphs before and after you should notice some interesting things when comparing the tune and the dyno printout.

I've read that book, it is pretty good. The read is simple and straight forward, but at the same time it gives you the information you need. Interesting too.

What I ended up doing is getting the Demon and wideband installed myself so I could play with it, then just paying a tuner to get it right the first time. I asked him a lot of questions when I had the chance to and things start to make a little more sense.

Now that I have the hardware though I can go in anytime and make changes to my liking or to compensate for any mods, fortunately I have a few people I can go to for help if I have any questions, but a lot of people on HT here are willing to help as long as you pose the question nicely, completely, and with competant grammar.

Read... and read... and read... then familiarize yourself with the software of your choice... then try it on a friends car or your own... Its alot easier to understand once you have sat in the seat for countless hours... collected data (aka datalog) and studied it enough to make your changes...

Im 3yrs deep and consider myself a novice still... kinda...

Dont just download one program... download all of them...

I did a crap load of reading online. I got a basemap and did some A/F tuing myself and I could deffinently feel a difference. It's amazing how much broader the torque curve is just by upping the rev limiter and tuning the VTEC crossover on an H22. I'm also getting the same gas mileage in the process. I'll be getting better once I get around to doing some more tuning.

Like the other people said, READ READ READ. Most of what I've learned I read on forums. I'm also currently reading, "How to Tune and Modify Engine Management Systems" by Jeff Hartman. I learned stuff from the intro itself, let alone the actual chapters so far.
