so to add up some numbers on each of the options

1 chip the ecu and take it to a shop to tune 16 dollars + shop tuning fee

2 crome-free software

if bought separately:
chip kit from xenocron or moates 16 dollars
chip burner 85 dollars
HULOG (needs crome-pro) 35 dollars
ostrich 2.o 175 dollars
total around 310-320 +shipping

1.5 moates "honda tuning package" 300
includes above combination

2 crome pro 150
demon board 250
total 400

3 neptune package 400
includes demon board and neptune software licenced to that single board.

4 hondata package 400-600 depends on where you look

to me it seems like the difference is an illusion

the crome tuning package costs only about 100 bucks less than neptune.

and crome-pro costs same as neptune.
whats the difference between those two is there any advantages of having either one for example if i buy the demon board?

NepTune has a lot more features and with NepTune + Demon board you'll have on board logging and 5 additional analog inputs. With Crome + Demon board you get neither of those things.

On my boosted Civic Shuttle RT4WD I use TurboEdit to make a basemap, and BRE for the rest. It's simple and it works great. The reason why I use BRE over TurboEdit for the tuning is the simplicity of the 2D diagram/table in BRE (Turbo Edit don't have this, and the 3D table sucks :p)

I have tuned some low boost FI setups with Crome free, and some simple NA setups. It works good and the software is easy to use. (when you are familiar with the software and the engines you really don't need the logging capability, although it do make it somewhat easier, especially if you don't have a dyno). I also used it allot on a Civic I used to own. That car started with a d15b2, then I went for a DOHC ZC on turbo edit, then BRE, and then i converted it to OBD-1 and used Crome free, and then before I sold it i swapped the engine for a B16A2 (also on Crome).

I have also tuned some cars on S300. It's a good software/hardware combo at a fare price. Quite easy to use. My favorite thing about it is probably that anyone can download the full version of the software at any time, and install it without any codes or anything. Also they have come with quite a few upgrades to it lately (analog inputs, CPR, bigger logging memory++).

I have only used eCtune once (with demon), and the software was nice, but when my customer had some trouble with his engine (in the middle of nowhere of course), and he could not connect his software because there was a problem with the license running out of date or something I decided not to recommend it to people anymore.

I have also only used Neptune (with demon) once, but i loved it! This was the same customer as above (he switched from ectune to neptune). Also I have never heard anything negative about it. They have some cool features the others don't have (boost by TPS, anti theft, "valley mode"?), and they don't miss any features (other than maybe COP, but it is rarely needed). It seems like they are careful about releasing new features (they don't do anything "half ***"), and at the same time it is more advanced than the others (example: you get to see what the ignition timing actually is, and the VE fuel enrichment map). Also I like the concept that tuners have the ability to buy a tuner license (use the software to it's full extent, and when done burn the finished map to a chip). If I had a bigger potential customer group, or I get my own OBD-1 project car I would for sure buy this license.

I have used AEM twice, and I suppose it's a good software with lots features the P30 based systems don't have, but the software it self could be easier to use if you ask me. Also I like the way Honda did it with separated low and high cam maps. I think finding the correct crossover point is easier that way.
In the last Dsport magazine I read that AEM have a new line of EMS systems on the way (going to take over for the series 2 I think). It looked interesting.

I have now started researching for a K20A project, and Chris at Xenocron recommended Haltech. I have downloaded the software and I think it looks great.

I would like to try Mega Squirt III also

I also love the guys behind pgmfi.org. When I started with this I think it was with getthodyne, and obd-0 edit. Then überdata if I remember correctly. lol

One question from me. If I wanted closed loop WBO2 controll, where would I have to go, and how good does it work? Do you just plot in what AFR you want where, and start driving carefully?

kpro because the only other two options (aem and haltech) still have bugs to be worked out. my buddy bought a haltech because he had kpro before and wanted to be different, only to find out nobody local had any experience with it.

Haltec is hand over fist better than K Pro. It's just unfortunate that there are so many tuners out there who have limited themselves in what software they can use for tuning.

I know a few locals running MSII & MSIII on K series setups with no issues. $500 tuned! You just have to know someone who is not limited by their use of software. There seem to be a growing number of tuners out there that shy away from Haltech, Motec and MegaSquirt. Not sure why, it could be due to the fact that there is more information required to setting them up than the others. Actually tuning them once they are set up properly is really no difference.

i have no doubt it is. but for me, being this is my daily, i dont see myself using all the features a full standalone has to offer. kpro fits the bill perfectly for me. once i put cams in i'll be done with it.

u guys think its worth spending extra 100-150 dollars to get neptune instead of getting the moates tuning package?

yes. Datalogging, direct logging, unlimited tuning plus bug free and great customer service. Although I don't have experience with freeware tuning or chip burning I am glad I went with Neptune. TBH it's the only mod I've never had buyers remorse about.

Neptune with the Moates Demon is where it's at these days!

I'm saying this and I haven't even used the combo. However I have used the software and anything hardware related that comes out of Craig Moates' shop. Is of top notch quality and fully backed with great customer service.

that doesnt come with software. that is hardware only.

you dont need the burn1 or chips unless you plan on tuning other cars. and thats only possible with crome.

and the speed of the demon vs. the ostrich is night and day. Not to mention neptune is not supported on the ostrich unless you are a dealer. and even then its worth the money to get the demon setup.

That was one of the reasons that I went with Neptune over Hondata when I switched from an AEM EMS.

hondata s300...

i ran it in my EG with a b18C after running a stock p72.. used a type r base map. made a few slight changes.. and it made a world of difference.
and im running it in my b20z with a gsr head... with no problems
and my buddy has it in a d17y7...with boost by gear that runs good.

i dont have much experience with chrome or neptune..

but i frequently use AEM for my St165...

i LOVE the s300... i never used s100 s200..

ive used Vfacs and s300s on hondas lol thats it... but the s300 with an ecu core costs around 510 shipped from BLUER and he does a good job..

so many people inflate the prices... they want 600 for a used ECU.you just gotta keep your eye out for a good price on a used one...

they are just so simple and easy to use... if you understand tuning. the s300 is a no brainer.. its USB.will run with no problems on windows xp or windows 7...

they all have there pros and cons. the most important thing is having someone that knows what they are doing tune it to your car..
so it all depends on whatever you can afford to pay.

for honda ECU,
hondata, hands down.

for stand alone,
considering the price, i'd go with AEM. simply because I havent gotten a change to tune Haltech. w/o $ restriction, m800 for me. interface is very simple!

Have you used neptune before?

As someone who really dislikes hondata as a company, i like the software but interface is cluttered imo. I say this because i dont use it often enough to memorize the icons.

With neptune everything is under parameter submenus in one window. I do like on hondata, now, they finally allowed you to change what the keys do. I HATED cntrl+I/D to change the mapping.

Im looking forward for new k series development to be released. I havent heard much about it lately tho.

i have crome pro and i use it to tune other peoples cars, and i use ectune on my personal car... i do like neptune tho but if i cant find anyone to buy my ectune and ostrich then im gonna just stick with it i dont like the licensing problems, but i have been lucky and had it fixed within a few days so i cant complain

i dont like hondata because of some things that happened in the past between them and dave blundell aka pgmfi.org that was bullshit and i will never support them for that

If nobody buys it, keep your Ostrich. We'll have a NepTune version for Ostrich soon.
