Default pgmfi

to tune a car what i learned is u have to chip ur obd1 compatible ecu (with a kit of chips)
To program the chip i need a burner(where to get it from?)
an emulator is used to reprogram a car map infinite times till u get the 1 ur after then u can upload or download that file to burn it to a chip
(can u just run the emulator as a chip once u find the map best suited to ur app<if not what will happen if u do,will the map b saved on the emulator)
do i need an emulator?
for the ultimate tuners package what should i look for (for instance)

chiping kit
emulator
lap top
wb o2 sensor
rs32/usb cords
software(crome,uberdata)
chi burner

im tring to wiki all the info i can on this sub but h-t has ppl already experienced in this sub so lay it on me

correct my misinformation plz im really triing to learn how to diy programing and chipping my ecu myself (n yes i know there pro out there but som things u wanna learn to better urself even after the trouble positive feed back plz)

I would personally suggest you look into an RTP package system such as Hondata, eCtune, Neptune. This would cause you to avoid needing to buy a bunch of different hardware etc.

These softwares will allow you to learn how to actually tune instead of working around bugs & rigging code etc.

Chip Burner/Datalogging Cable/Romulator Devices are all made by Craig at Moates.net
You will find vendors like us carry their products.

Concerning a wideband, you can use anything from an aem uego to a plx, innovate etc.

Concerning software, I would shy away from software that isn't really updated on a regular basis such as crome & uberdata. Hondata, eCtune, Neptune are the way to go at the moment.

i can tune my ecu myself with hondata?i know it is more user friendly only needing a pacth cord and laptop with program after chiping, but what about ectune do i still need a emulator to change tunes without buying multiple chips to burn

i wanna b able to change the tune at will with no down time like sending the chip out or waiting for a dyno tuner

ok simply what all i need to run ectune or neptune which system is the cheaper n which is the most cause i wanna go boost but till then i wanna just get it tuned

Yes you can tune the ecu yourself if you have hondata/ectune/neptune if you have a understanding of what you are doing. With all 3 that i mention you get a RTP board that fits inside the ecu and they can be all programed directly from a laptop.

http://ectune.com/

Both are great...Neptune customer service is topnotch!

Contrary to what a lot of people in this thread are saying, you can modify, tune, and datalog your ecu yourself with nothing more than the cost of a few chips, a rom burner, a wideband o2 meter and some soldering time, if you are so inclined. By far the most expensive, but most necessary part, is the Wideband o2 meter.

You can buy a willem brand rom burner on ebay for around $30, or moates.net sells an easier to use rom burner for $80.

An emulator is not strictly needed for a beginning ecu tuner. The purpose of an emulator is to cut down on the time to switch out eeproms when you are tuning a car. They obviously make life a lot easier, but they also make it more expensive. A rom burner is all you need to start. you make modifications to the binary, then burn it to an electronically erased eeprom, and put the new chip in place of the old, or just keep reburning the same chip until you get the tune right.

strictly speaking, You don't need to buy an emulator. If you want to get in to tuning more than just your car, or want to be able to modify your car on the fly all the time (why?) then an emulator might be a good choice. If you are looking to have a car tuned by someone, then they should already have an emulator that will work with your ecu once it is chipped.

If you want to learn about the subject and not just pay people to do the work for you, then I suggest going to http://mycomputerninja.com/~jon/www.pgmfi.org/twiki/bin/view/Library/WebHome.html and reading everything in every section.

Then, to answer further questions, you can go to http://forum.pgmfi.org and ask questions and read threads from other people. you can also post in this forum on H-t and/or pm people, me included, with questions.

to summarize, to get started tuning yourself, all you need are these things:

a wideband o2 meter of any sort.. aem, innovate, plx, build your own
a rom burner ebay type or moates.net type
a chip kit: assemble one from scratch or moates.net
instructions on how to chip an ecu with pictures
datalogging hardware build your own or moates.net
obd1 tuning software free crome or the others...
basemaps to start with
