ls/vtec question
hello everyone im new to honda-tech n not really sure if im in the right thread.. ok here's my question i got an 88 ef with first gen b16 and it started knocking today...and i wanted to know if its cheaper and better to go ls/vtec or should i stick with the b16 block n get it fixed.. if anyone can help me i would really appreciate it.. oh n if any1 knows how much either one would cost me that'll be cool..thanks for ur time
In that case I'd install the LS block. The added displacement will help your torque numbers plus B18's are cheap and should be readily available at your local junk yard or on craigslist. Otherwise if you can find a GSR block, and have the budget for it, that'd be really nice for it. GL w/ your car.

Research and read, labor cost is a wide range. It just depends on how much the mechanic charges. Not everyone has the same rate.

It cost $272 for the Golden Eagle LS/V kit and requires no machining however I'm sure you can probabaly put together you're own kit for much less if you shop around. I'm not sure what the labor cost would be though since I always turn my own wrenches. I can tell you it's not too hard to do and you can buy your own tools for the work for less than the average hour of labor cost. Your current ECU should work fine as well.
Here's a link to the GE kit.

BTW, if you plan to beat on it alot, I suggest you get some ARP rod bolts since that's the primary weak point on these blocks at higher revs.
