Read read read. Tuning is a very DIY culture and it's best if you do a lot of the legwork on figuring out how things work.

Tuning is not a "one size fits all" type of thing; you either have it or you don't. Sure you can learn how to play around with numbers and change settings, but not everyone can grasp the full concept. Unfortunately, there isn't a method that suits everyone. It basically comes from experience and practice and as you "come into your own" method of doing things you find what's easiest for you. If you LOVE reading, there is a story of how a guy taught himself how to tune. He basically walks you through the process and tells some of his first hand experiences... So sit back, relax, and prepare your wallet to potentially destroy your engine because - KNOWLEDGE IS POWER!!!

there is so much math and science behind how and why a 4 stroke makes power.... its really not all that simple.

heres the jist. adding more fuel makes it richer, subtracting fuel makes it leaner.

adding timing adds timing, removing timing removes timing.

sorry if that sounds retarded but thats how it is. you need to know what the motor wants and when it wants it, usually by understanding how a 4 stroke works.

Yup. Build a mild motor, blow it up, figure out what you did wrong. Then you're on the way!

want to learn to tune?

1. aquire a good platform
2. build it how you want it
3. install a decent tuning program
4. get a sewing machine
5. take off your pants
6. grab some scissors and cut out the pockets
7. sew in new pockets that are very deep because this is what you will need to learn how to tune.

hope i helped.

I guess I really started on dirtbikes, 4 wheelers, carbs at a really young age, just understanding how it worked, and cause and effect of making changes. That progressed to cars with carbs. Then cars with fuel controllers.. Later down the road started hanging out at a shop where they built all motor hondas around 99-2000. After a while of watching the owner tune fuel injetion I started learning how to do it and eventually he was having me tune his cars. From there I just kept learning. I still learn new things all the time.
