how to learn to tune...
besides the obvious way of been taught.. do people just go out with all the tuning equipment necessary and take chances blowing up motors?? im not talking about experienced tuner just people who want to learn but have no way to learn... i wouldnt want to go and build a motor and blow it up by have something set wrong... i know some of the basics but doesnt mean i have the money to go and blow thing up to learn... thanks for any advise...
I learned by reading here and getting advice from well known tuners. It isn't that hard really. I enjoy it and plan on tuning other cars for extra cash. This is for Hondata by the way.

yeah thats what i was planning on learning... seems to be the best bang for the buck right now...plus i have it for my next setup... thanks for the advise...
It's like anything, just practice. Someone orignally figured out how to do it on their own when nobody else knew how and designed the whole thing... So how hard can it be now that a million people can do it-- there's always someone to ask if you run into a problem. Imagine what the first guy went through! I say start with a rich basemap, have a wideband, a good solid fuel + management system... It's pretty hard to screw up if you know what your shooting for. Monitor egt, knock, and afr. Run as much timing as possible at all times, without knocking--- that's key to making power... Try to keep the afr conservative, flat, and consistent. I'd shoot for 12:1 on a street car. That's about it. I read somewhere on the 'net about a DIY knock monitor (a mic + amp + headphone setup) that goes right off your block to you ear (afterall, your the best knock meter)-- that sounds like a good tool too. The rest is just common sense. Small changes are better than big, yada yada. I bet just about anyone can do it.
yeah true... that knock sensor idea sounds like a good one... problem is if i ever tune i would want to know how to make some max horsepower... i however understand i will have to better understanding the tuning process to expect to push any max horsepower numbers...
Ive been reading the forum on http://www.efi101.com. there is alot of good info on there.

aren't you trying to make alot of power on the stock internals? your gonna want to be very conservative and pull timing with the stock internals to reduce the cylinder pressures, turn the boost up and let the turbo do the work.

hondata actually did let consumers attend the class but it was only open to the ppl with the full options (4B)......would have been nice to attend if it wasnt al the way on west coast.

First you should have a pretty good understanding of whats going on inside the engine..
Then u have to understand the utencil u r using to tune with.. Thats why I like hondata, all the hard tuning stuff is already taken care of for u by Honda R&D themselves hehe..

!!! If you never try it and say its hard... then you have already lost the battle!
