Default Saving a Block with Thrust Bearing Failure

Good morning, recently picked up a sleeved block that had thrust bearing failure. It needs pistons, rods, rings, and bearings for certain.

The bottom of the cylinder walls got pelted pretty bad. We're planning on bore-ing it out a bit and honing it. Otherwise no damage to the walls, and it seems to have been decked properly.

The sides got scraped up pretty bad. Did some damage to the crank too. We're planning on balancing and polishing the crank.

Some random RTV on this port here.

And some damage to the caps. Likely replacing these.

There it is. What do you think? Savable? Just go with a new sleeved block? Only going to make 400-450, weekend street/track. Thanks for your time.

That really doesn't look too bad. The surface on the block that is in contact with the thrust bearing doesn't look like it was damaged. Might be some old bearing material still adhered to the surface.

If it were mine I would clean it up, inspect clearances and run it.

And seriously inspect that oil pressure sensor port covered in Hondabond. Could be a nasty crack hiding in there.

My thought as well.

The only part of the block I'm slightly concerned with is the side of the crank sadle where the thrust bearing was, not familiar enough with failures in that area to know how bad that looks, but seems fairly chewed up. If there's a good machinist or especially any shop familiar with Honda engines around you, I'd have them look at it. You're going to need to take it to a machine shop anyway for the cylinder bore.

There is definitely some heavy scoring on the sides and in the thrust bearing seat. It certainly isn't flat. The pressure sensor port is now becoming a concern, I didn't know that was what that was! I'm glad I posted here. If the thrust bearing seats are truly a concern, maybe this block isn't worth saving after all.

Maybe send 4Piston or Ramey Racing a link to this thread and ask them what they think. It could still be cheaper to mail one of them this block and have them repair it versus buying a new one. If you mailed it I'd just have them do the full shortblock assembly - I'm not sure if you were planning on building it yourself.

As far as that oil jacket goes, they should be able to do a proper weld repair on it if needed to seal it up rather than leaving that RTV on there.
