welded diff / solid diff / drag spool - on a street car
I asked this before and only got one post response saying 'no way' but have talked to another guy recently who has the diff. welded on his accord and loved it. He said that the tires squealled a little bit in parking lots and what not but it actually handled very well in moderate speed corners.
Does anyone have any experience with this?

i have heard rumors that its extremly harsh on axles...especially while turning.
you wont get the "slip" out of it like you would, if you were to run an lsd, or stock diff...for some reason i think that with a welded diff/ spool or something to that effect, it would either twist the shafts into pieces or twist the splines right off the shaft, than u would be fucked.
bad idea on the street. get a quaife and save yourself a huge headache.

I agree with 2.2L
I put a spool in my drag car, and its a pain in the *** any time I have to turn,
its great for hooking up in a race, it goes perfectly straight, but the turns would be a disaster on public roads....

I have had several friends that were driving on the street with a welded diff and while it did make the car go down the track pretty nice it was a killer on the driver everytime they had to make any kind of a sharp turn.
If it's a street car dont be cheap and have the diff welded, just spend the money and get a quaife. They ain't even that expenive and well worth it. Besides with a quaife you get the lifetime warranty. But if the car is going to be strictly a drag car then you could, if you really had to and had no other options weld the diff, but definately would not weld a diff on a daily driver street car.
I got a question...
everyone seems to think that with a spool/welded diff, that when you break an axle the car is going to pull. I dont seem to comprehend how that woudl be so. I could understand it under hard accel, but otherwise wouldn't it pull/work just like an open diff if you broke an axle?
to me this seems to be a generic rumor about it..
anyone care to elaborate?

see how tony1 feels about breaking axles with a spool.
