WEIGHT LIMITS in the ALL MOTOR STREET CLASS
I think that weight limits should be implemented in every sanctioned event for the ALL MOTOR STREET CLASS. This will be fair for all the racers who are competitive in this class. It should also be based on type of motor and displacement. After reading up on the All Motor Shoot out where a there was a weight requirement, most racers could not even beat nor were near their best E.T. times because of this. And being that some cars weigh next to nothing, is really an unfair race. I also notice some cars in running in this class, have holes in there floor board to have a lighter car. We all pay the same entrance amount, aiming to place or even take the event, but some just can't because of the weight of the cars.
Let it be about the building of the motor, and how well the driver can drive the car....

I agree also, thats what made the shoot out interesting couple weeks ago, nobody really ran away with it.....most of the races were pretty close...
All of the big/important races have weight limits. All of the races that dont have limits are smaller local races except for BOTI but with their rules you can only make the car so light. I dont know about the rest of the country but in the northeast if they were to have weight limits at the smaller local races a lot of cars wont show up. I just dont know why everyone doesnt make their car light if they are allowed to.
Its doesnt matter what the rules say the people who go fast will always adapt to the rules and still go fast. No one ran away with the shootout because no one was supposed to. All the top cars from the country was there and competition was tight. If there was no weight limit for that race competition would have still been tight. I just dont like seeing cars getting slower. They should be getting faster each year. We should be lucky we have places to race.

Ok so let me respond to this thing one thing at a time . . .
You want weight limits based on displacement? OK so What national series do we have ? Oh wait . . . none. .
So you want every local series/track/organizer to buy an air pump, pay someone to pump each motor, at each race and then go from there ?
Sorry man, unfortunately our scene is not like Comp Eliminator where this would fly. . . It just isnt feasible as far as man power and time frame.
Some events have a hard time finishing in a full day as is and this will almost certainly add to more "hurrying" during them.
Now I absolutely agree this would be the FAIREST way to do weight limits . . . It just isnt going to happen with no nationwide conformity or structure.
There were no cars with holes in the floorboard at the shootout. That would have been a direct violation of the rules . . . Most classes this would be the same. . Cut doors and panels is one thing but the factory floorboard have to remain intact. That holds true for almost every "street" class.
I keep seeing people saying that there are all these cars that weigh next to nothing. Really? When were you at the scales ? So you can tell how light a car is because you see cut panels? Cutting cars doesnt make them that light btw. I could cut up a car to hell and maybe save 75lbs. Most cars in the north east weigh 1950-2000lbs . . I'd say 2000lbs is probably the average around the country. . .Most people had to add 100-150lbs to make shootout weight.
We made the weight 2150 at the shootout in order to attract other series motors. I personally think 2150 was too high for Ks , but it was necessary in order to attract other motors. . . However what happen? We had one H series show up. . . Thats it . . .
I honestly dont think weight limits are necessary at most local events. For shootouts I think they are necessary to attract everyone. And this isnt coming from someone biased. I run a coupe that weighs almost 2100lbs. I'm a heavy weight lol. Shootouts and local races are 2 different things though. 350-500 on the line in comparison to 5000 , rules need to be in place.
I personally think if we do anything, we should just have a 2000lb cap. Every car, every setup must weigh at least 2000lbs and then call it a day.
The problem is , because fields are so light nowadays that you need to be broad in your rules. . . So in the north east we allow lexan in our local events. . .Everywhere except the windshield. . . Yes this may take away from the street car look but in the races that didnt allow lexan you could see the huge drop off in car count in comparison to the events that did allow it. . Its just like sales, you have to sell a product based on the client. . The organizers saw what brought the most racers out and took it from there. We happen to have a large street racing backround here. I would assume other well populated areas in the country would have the same story. . . cars that were street raced had no rules . . So now we attracted these guys off the streets to race, which is great. The events had to conform in order to attract more car count . . And that is directly related to not having a weight limit . .
But where we run into the problem is man power and scales . . . Organizers will have to pay someone to man the scales and may even have to pay extra to rent the scales. Furthermore, some tracks may not even have scales.
Sorry for the rant, Just my $.02

here we go again with all the crying about weight?
why can't everyone just adapt to the weight limit's required by certain series...like Jake said 2150 for a "K" at shootout i thought was a little high even 2200 for WCF is high.Take my car for example it's normal weight is between 2050-2070 with driver and if anybody looks at it they will tell it's not cut up 1 bit so why should i add a ton of weight to my car that didnt even weigh that much when bought from dealer, but i do it anyway to meet certain serie's just like shootout & wcf just like everyone else..thats why the shootout was such a huge success racing was great with everyone adapting to the rules & weights

You need weight limits so a B18 can compete with a K24 on a level field or D16, etc
I'm no expert here but I think a 50 or 100lb difference would help the smaller engine keep up.
Like Jake said, the track would need equipment to measure the volume in the cylinder. Or you just relay on honest people to give the true displacement.

sounds like the OP has a beef with the racers in his class at the local races. what he needs to do is get in contact with the other guys and your track and set something up. if they want to race at a particular event then they will conform to those rules or not race. like stated above if you have more rules you may weed out potential cars and the races go away. thats why this doesnt happen on a smaller local level. just go out there and have fun. if you are up against some guys that are lighter and faster then make your car lighter and find some more power.
i think you should get the car as light as you want with out cutting doors or hole saw holes inside the car.. glass windows.. no cutting of the skeleton inside the car like i been seeing. those are just what we call in my neck of the woods dirty street cars.. to run in all motor street class you should follow boti rule book.. if you stick to this all cars should be about or really close to each other..
I Think the 2 things that should decide weight
1) Engine series
2) Wheel Base
I only say this because not everyone runs an EG and everyone know that CRX has a natural handicap at the sixty foot when we are talking anymore then 280hp..
Next year if the shoot out considered wheel base as a ground for weights i would for sure bring our cars back east.. I'm sure there are fast CRX's out there that want to play but will not keep up because of the weight they would have to add..

In that definition then someone taking out the door bars in a car would consider them not legal for the class . .
I cant say that I dont disagree with your thinking, but in reality , with the fields not being packed we need to get away with constricting rules like that.
Weight limits are one thing, but controlling how someone gets to the weight is another.
Danny there is a crx over here that is fully gutted with a v6 swap going 10.50s . . . Now that car is a little bit of an extreme example but where the Crx has the disadvantage of wheelbase , it has an advantage of weight. . . It can be tossed either way i guess
Also that would put coupes at an even more disadvantage. I cant get my coupe lighter than a hatch by any stretch. So because the coupe's wheelbase of
103.2" in comparison to the hatch's 101.3" that would mean I would have to weigh even more ?

here is a different way of looking at it:
adding weight to slow down the faster cars will also make the slower cars running the same motor even slower.....
that being said, i think it is important to realize in street or sportsman classes you dont want cars going faster and faster every year. this only hurts the sport.
those of you who do not realize this are thinking of yourselves rather than the sport as a whole.
there needs to be some type of et limit in place to prevent the sportsman classes from getting out of hand as they have.
with an et limit in place, racers who want to go faster will be encouraged to move onto a pro class, opening the door for new sportsman racers to emerge and pro classes to fill up once again.
this is how the sport will grow and become stable over time.
those of you who want to go out and run personal best's at every event and go faster and faster every year pushing the sportsman classes into unheard of et's are doing so for your own short term benefit without thinking of the sport from a long term standpoint.
nobody wants to admit it or even think about it that way, but its the truth.

i agree with giving weight restrictions per motor, but its not fair to guys that have motors that are k's or h's that have more money in it cause of part cost and maching will cost more and make more power. its the same idea for turbo guys that because most people use b and k motors and h's dont produce near the power that those motors due are they going to give them weight restrictions.

Just because some people are more dedicated than others doesn't mean they should be penalized because some people want to sit on here and be internet tough guys and cry about weight and then not even show up to the events.
Just my $.02
I totally disagree...why would you want to hold back cars when they have the ability to go faster. It may increase attendance in the class but you have to think of the whole picture, what spectators want to come out and see the same cars running the same times year after year, that's just boring and without spectators the sport will die as well. I think people going faster in the class is motivation to other racers, it's not just for personal bests and bragging rights. No motivation = No goals, what's the point then.....

Ok well here is where I disagree with your statement Danny.
The pro class is a prime example that actually proves everyone's point. . .
How many people have the money to build a pro chassis ? How many events allow pro cars to justify the expense?
SO your point can be made by saying if everyone stepped up to another class then there would be more races for pro cars, and mine could be made by saying who would want to incur the expense of running a pro class when there is no one to run.
You cant just say everyone needs to step up in my opinion. I dont have the time or money to run a pro car, let alone build one. I can spend 5-8k a year on making my car faster , but I cant spend 25-40k in one shot just to have a chassis made. Others are in the same boat.
There is a way to make everyone happy and weight limits is the way to do it, but there has to be some kind of medium. We have to find a way to paint with a broad brush while still getting all the little spots if you catch my drift.
Simply saying the fast people need to go pro is not the answer or resolution. At least not anytime soon.
There is $.02 more of my opinions haha

we will never have that when sportsman guys are happy going as fast as they can in their street classes and not stepping up in the sport.
so i guess you guys are happy w/ the small picture....running personal best's in the sportsman classes forever

as far as being dedicated....i am the first one to agree Tim is one of the most dedicated guys there is when it comes to drag racing no doubt.
me on the other hand, i am dedicated to my family first. drag racing comes further down the list to me, so no im not the most dedicated racer out there.
but i will say this, when you have sportsman racers raping the street classes, the sport wont grow on a grand scale as it did a decade ago PERIOD

there are not many pro classes to run at the moment but why do you think that is?
and who says you have to build a chassis and drop xxx amount of dollars into a car just to step up to pro?
dont worry about being the best right off the bat, take what you have and start fromn there, the rest will fall into place over time.
honestly, if we have pro allmotor classes to run, i would definately be in there running 10s and be happy doing it but thats just me.
i certainly dont want to be stuck in a sportsman class forever
