NHRA Clarifies Rule Changes
This just got posted on nhrasportcompact.com.

I checked my sources, and this was supposed to be posted on Friday, but some internal email problems prevented it from getting to the NHRA webmaster until this morning. So for those who called Javier to task on a previous thread for not having updates posted, it was out of his control.

on the clarification. Let the techs and SFi sort things out and I think sometime in 2005 that Rado, Brent L, and who ever else will be able to run in the NHRA PRO FWD class.

------------------------------------------------------------------------
09.24.04
As a result of feedback from competitors and fans, NHRA issues the following clarification on three rule changes previously announced for 2005.
HOT ROD
Chopped roofs are prohibited on any new construction. Cars that are completed or near completion may be grandfathered into competition. However, any car under construction must be documented with NHRA on or before October 4, 2005. Send pictures and a description of work left to be done on the car, as well as an expected completion date, to NHRA Technical Services, 2035 Financial Way, Glendora CA 91741, or email the information to jskelly@nhra.com. You will be notified promptly of any decision regarding acceptance.
In addition, rules regarding the OEM body shell, (roof panel, A-pillars, B-pillars, C-pillars, rocker panels, rocker boxes, quarterpanels, firewall, floorpan, and full unibody structure from firewall to front of strut tower) will be more strictly interpreted in 2005. Fabricated or aftermarket replacement structures will not be permitted on any Hot Rod vehicle in 2005. Existing cars with any non-original body shell structures must be retrofitted for Hot Rod competition in 2005.
MODIFIED:
Engine swaps utilizing different engine and body makes is limited to a 2 rotor Mazda rotary engine in any 1984 and older, accepted body style. Other non-corporate engine swaps will not be considered. The intention of this rule change is to permit participation by some existing cars, not to open the door for exotic swaps.
PRO FWD:
The "V-Drive" configuration is currently prohibited for a number of reasons. Of the 2 or 3 cars currently under construction, all use different hardware and different configurations. In all 3 applications, the V-drive unit and mounting is unique, and completely untried in a high horsepower, FWD drag racing application. While NHRA encourages innovation, there are currently too many variables involved in this particular drivetrain configuration to allow it's use in competition.
NHRA is not opposed to the "V-Drive" concept forever. But acceptance cannot be considered until those variables mentioned above, are resolved in a satisfactory manner. To that end, NHRA encourages any builder or competitor currently working on such a design to contact the Technical Services Department with photographs, diagrams, material lists, test results, etc., so that a working dialogue might be established.</TD></TR></TABLE>

Do the hot rod body rules include front end rules? I remember a couple years back when we wanted to put a 4" splitter on the front of kenny's car and were told we couldn't cause it took away from the oem appearance. Some of the front ends now don't even resemble a car at all! Are there gonna be restrictions to how far you can go with body work? Just trying to figure it all out, may have another hot rod car in the works for next season...

just the glance i got at the sunfire plus the pics, it wasnt exactly a unibody car with a cage attached, more like the other way round.
