well changed the oil tonight after finally putting the repaired 6765 back on. checked my magnetic drain plug and found this on the end with a fair amount of gunk...





i have not rebuilt a shortblock before, so i was looking to see if anyone can identify what these possibly are? this is a benson sleeved ls block with gsr crank, ctr pistons and eagle rods. i also took some pics of the vtec solenoid since metal will typically find its way through there. not much in the screen, but a fair amount of shavings had gathered in the bottom of the solenoid.

 

Ya, I found something like that before in my oil too. Never did find out what it was....

 

what went wrong with the turbo? i wander if it was something out of the center section of the turbo

 

LOL thats not encouraging. my first thought was retainer, but i already had the valve cover off and the retainers look great

Looks to be part of the valve spring seat....

 

it very well could be something to do with the turbo. long story short...

it was ***** *** hot out one day on the way to the track, drove the car to the track, ran all day and the car ran fine. however, the whole way there the temp was probably 210 or so. Anyways, on the way home i noticed pretty often i would hear this chirping noise and couldnt figure out what it was, got home and i realized it was the compressor wheel rubbing the compressor housing. After shutting the car off you could visibly see the fins were damaged on the wheel and there was play both in and out, and up and down on the wheel. it spun freely though. Nothing else was wrong that i could see, but i have not had the turbo taken apart

 

like the top retainer? all those are there and in good shape

 

thrust bearing from turbo....seen it plenty do you have a blow off valve?

yep, its a tial. so you are sure its from turbo? if so and its in there, do you think id be fine just dropping the pan, taking a quick look around and putting it back together?

Kinda sounded like metal washers clanking together? Is the car building boost? Check the shaft on your turbo hasn't snapped. My less 100 mile old 6765 shaft snapped. Precision couldn't give me a good reason as to why it failed.

 

Havent checked that but i have another new one so its all good on that front. didnt really have a clanking noise though

 

It looks like a retainer, but you said they are all good.

Next guess it would be a spring seat. It has that look to it.

looks exactly like a thurst collar from the turbo..

look at the top half that his index finger is laying on.. thats what its from I bet...

the oil also had a nice golden tint to it. could be from the bearing going out as well im assuming?

i know you have a b-series but the broken piece looks very much like the top of the k-series LMA springs (the piece that gives in when the spring is fully compressed).

OP, Sam and Jason are right. I bet it came from the turbo man.

 

Hoping so. Took the baffle off the bottom end and it looks like new all through the short block, got the cams out because I'm dropping some ctr's in and everything in the head seems fine, so that's all I can think of. Didn't pull the oil pump up but with the screen catching what it did I'm hoping it's fine. Going to put a cheapo filter on with some new oil and get it up to operating temp, shut it off and refrain the oil with a new filter.

 

I'm betting the same thing, the pieces are the right size to be able to make their way down the drain and not cause any other issues. Those small fillings in the vtec solenoid could have easily been cycled in as the oil sloshed and went through the pickup, where the bigger pieces wouldn't fit eventually getting caught by the magnet.
