Default 1979 accord

I have a 79 accord and i am having issues with it and was wondering if anyone could possibly help me out. First is every time i turn it on, if it has been sitting for a while, it turns on then turns back off. After I drive it for a little bit its fine it idles fine, but when i start moving it hickups at around 2k rpm then as it rises it runs fine....what could be the issue? Another question is what is the normal operating temp for this thing....when i ask this i mean if i am reading the gauge...how do i explain this... say it looks like a fuel gauge about 3/4 of the gauge is black and the est is white...where should the needle be at op temp? thanks for the help

The needle on the temp gauge should rise to about 1/2 way up the gauge, then when the thermostat opens, it will drop back down, and should sit near the edge of the white part of the line. Think of it this way, the black area is too cool, and the white area is a bit too warm, where they meet is where you want it to run. A slight variance is okay, and before the thermostat opens it will go a little ways up into the white area. Might run a little warm on hot days, if it runs high up into the white area, I'd do some work on the cooling system. You mean that

As far as your idle issues, there aren't a lot of experts on those old carbs. Your first best bet is to make sure the choke is opening properly when warm and is closed when cold. If it's not closed when it's cold, it will run like crap until it's warmed up.

As far as that stumble, the only obvious think I know about is to check is for vacuum leaks. There are a lot of vacuum lines to dry out and crack. I don't know anything specific, as I've got a Weber on my 1st gen Accord. That's always another solution!

You should post some pics of your car! I'd love to see it, also head over to 1geez.com there are lots of other 1st gen Accord owners over there who might have more insight into the stumbling issues. Good Luck!

I got my Weber carb from Pierce Manifolds. Carbs unlimited also sells them. They should sell the conversion kits for your car complete brand new for about $450 or so. Might find a kit on eBay or something too. They'll come pre-jetted ready to bolt on.

No that's not true. I've seen that website before, I don't know where that info came from or who made that up, but there's no way. The original Accord got about 45mpg, maybe with a different tune, maybe 50mpg, but I think that's pushing it. Good luck with the project thought and let us know what happens! They're still great gas-saving cars.
