Default wiring subs to amp

i have 2 12" JL W3s...they're in a sealed enclosure with 1 pos/neg terminal on each side of the box. would this be the correct way to wire them to my 500/1 amp? i tried to wire the subs as separate lines (i.e. how u would a 2 channel amp) but i did not kno of this and the sound came out distorted in one sub while good in the other. would this be the correct way to wire my W3's on a single channel amp? if not, wat do i need to buy to set this up correctly or how should i set it up? i do not plan on spending another 300-400 dollars on another amp just to hear both subs

I can't tell how you have your speakers wired. Try disconnecting one of the subs see if you get more bass. If you do then one of the speakers is out of phase. Just reverse the +/- on one of the speakers.

You really need to provide some more info...

Are these DVC subs? (i thought that all W3's were) And what is the impedance on each coil?

Answer those two, and it's fairly simple to help you out.

Redteg,

For one, you aren't powering both your coils on your subs with a setup like that. W3's are all DVC last I checked, hence you need to do ALOT more wiring between the subs than that. Look at my reply to one of your posts regarding this for help.

There are a few things you need to figure out first, and then we can get these wired up.

If you don't know which 12w3 it is, you need to find out. Just pull the speaker out of the box, and check on the back. It will be something like 12w3-D2, meaning 2 2ohm voice coils.
All W3s are duel voice coils, and must both be used. If not, you will damage the speaker.
Since you have two terminal cups, you most likely have two separately sealed chambers, one for each sub. We need to do two steps of wiring to get everything running properly.

First we need to wire up the sub's voice coils. You can do this two ways:
When you connect +s to +s, and -s to -s(called parallel wiring). This cuts your ohm load in half, so if you have two 4 ohm coils, and you run them in parallel, then you will have a 2 ohm load. For the sake of our example (the 12w3-D2), you have two 2 ohm coils, so wiring them in parallel will give you a 1 ohm load.
The other way is the series connection, where you wire 1 + off of one coil, and a - off of the other coil together. That leaves one + and one - left going to the amp. This will double your ohm load. Your dual 2 ohm coils will give you an ohm load of 4 ohms in a series wiring scheme. You need to find out the minimum ohm load your amp will run at, and we can decide if you need to wire these up in series or parallel.

Now, its time to wire up the actual speakers to the amp. I think your diagram is trying to show a parallel wiring scheme to the amp, where you take the positive coming out of the terminal cups and connect them to the + lead on the amp, and do the same with the -s.

Lastly, that 500/1 is a mono amp, and you need to run it at a bridged setup.

Just find out what the speakers are, and what amp you have, and we can help you out.

Wes
