vent or sealed
ok i have one alpine type r 12'' and it's going to go in a suv the guy thats helping me build the box/setup keeps telling me that the music i play trance / tecno sound better in a vented box. im not a big fan at all on the vented boxs ive always had sealed boxs . which would be better for me. any help would be great thanks.

Then get a sealed...
Sealed genereally allow for cleaner and more accurate bass response...
I too am a big fan of the sealed box.

I agree, get sealed.
If you like the way a sealed box sounds over a vented box, and it's your car and your the one that is going to be listening to it, you win.
I also am no fan of vented boxes, I like the clean, tight and "accurate" sub bass response that you get from properly constructed sealed enclosures.

That's because they weren't designed properly. To have a vented box sound like a sealed, the tuning frequency needs to be very low, which will move the group delay out of the audiable range. This means that the box will be huge, and that's not very practical for car audio.
Your friends' vented boxes were probably tuned too high, creating a hump in the response. That would make the sub play much louder at the tuning frequency than above the tuning freq. Anything below the tuning freq would be cancelled by the front/back wave interference, meaning no output below the tuning frequency.
