Default testing subs

whats the best way to make sure some subs are in good condition and not blown? thanks

um yea that works, or you could get a multimeter and test for ohms and continunity as well.. hookin up will take longer than testing it the correct way..

^ Why not ? if they don't pop, there's no continuity throught the speaker. Also good for confiriming polarity.

That won't tell you if there is a mechanical problem. I've seen several woofers where the spider detached from the basket/frame.

A mutimeter will only tell you if a speaker is blown (sometimes). A speaker is basically an inductor with a magnetic field around it. The dc impedence is usually measured (which is the measurement stamped on the speaker). Speakers really dont function in the dc world. They fuction in the ac world. Which means the impedence changes with frequency. To complicate matters more you have a magnetic field around the inductor. When this changes it wil induce a charge in the inductor. Move the speaker when the multimeter is hooked up you will see the impedence change while the speaker is moving.

The point of all this: There is more to a speaker than the dc responce. There can be all kinds of internal problems a multimeter won't find.

Hooking them up is the best way to check them, play them at several different volumes.
