Stock stereo
I am thinking about putting a new head unit in my 5 gen. I am wondering if it will sound crappy with the stock speakers since the Acoustic Feedback System only works with the stock CD reciever. Does it really make a difference in sound quality if I do not use it?
Sasha: You'll gain little just replacing the HU; also the stock rear speakers are 2 ohm IIRC and most HUs won't like that.
fubar: The AFS adjusts volume depending on speed to compensate for increased road noise, etc.

Uhhh no, ATTS actually adjusts the volume and the sound settings, ie. bass if it hears the speakers begin to distort. There are to small microphones back by the two rear speakers, as soon as they hear what they think is distortion they will either turn down the bass or the volume.
Also, if you get a new Head Unit you will have to disconnect the ATTS from the back speakers. There are two small black boxes that sit next to them in the truck, Im sure directions for dissconnecting them is around here somewhere.

I was just wondering where you got ATTS out of the sound system... but you'd be fine running a new headunit with that stupid honda acoustic feedback crap, it's just dumb, so that's the least of your worries
ATTS what the hell; thats nothing to do with teh radio!
and i though only 4th Gens had AFBS as an option????
AFBS uses the small microphones on the rear speakers to detect distortion; as mentioned above turning the bass down to reduce distortion
you will have to remove the two controller boxes, and remember the AFBS rear speakers are setup in mono-configuration, only stereo in the font!
Aftermarket will peform better!
Im keeping the 1992 "Garthers' Alpine" Stock stereo, 6disk -nonSkip- changer in boot, cassette and full radio (+ band expander) and half mast ariel for high speeds! lol Japs really know how to make a stock motor!

The AFS only came in 97 and up vehicles.
It is a microphone that is underneath the cone and close to the spider. It detects distortion by measuring the reverb of the spider.
If you dont want to use it, just unplug it. But I do think you have to do a little extra wiring in the back to get the back speakers to work correctly.

uhhh no, the ATTS has nothing to do with your sound system dude. its the active torque transfer system, that helps with understeer and handling.
as for the question at hand, it will do fine with a new headunit, a buddy of mine actually replaced his in his old lude, and it sounded good, then he later upgraded to aftermarket speakers
