Ok..probably one of the dumbest things I have done but bare with me!
I just bought my new speed sensor because my old one had the pin in the middle corroded off. I installed it in a parking lot because I couldn't wait til I got home to see how fast I was going. The first time I installed it the speed didn't rise so I figured it might have been the VSS along with something else e.x. bad ground, wiring etc. I pulled into another parking lot to see if everything was connected right, but as I get ready to re-install it again, I bolt down the part that bolts down to the tranny to hard and the metal piece snapped in half. The weird thing is that the bolt I was tightening down didn't even feel as if it were tightened yet, that is why I kept going. Also, when I snapped the metal piece it snapped the plastic part that bolts on top of the piece that goes into the tranny. I figured since the plastic part is only there to help hold it to the metal part that I would be fine, considering there is another plastic part that helps hold it to the part that goes into the tranny. My only BIG screw up is basically the metal part that bolts into the tranny. Any way to fix it? Or what is it called, so I can look for it at Acura. I was going to see if someone could weld it, but the rep. at autozone said that piece wouldn't be able to get welded back. Oh I did use JB Weld, but that doesn't seem very reliable. And about the plastic thing breaking, am I a total lost at that? Or since it just holds it is it ok that one piece broke? Also, when I broke the metal piece and the VSS just moved around freely the speedometer worked, but jumped ALOT. Why is that? And when I installed it first without it breaking the speedometer moved NOWHERE!



Ok that's the picture, as you can see the white stuff is where the plastic part snapped. It is not aligned completely, but it still holds pretty well and allows me to bolt it down to the metal holder that goes on the tranny...anyone think that the VSS might not work because how it is being held? My opinion is it will considering it is still bolted down to the metal piece which goes into the tranny. I will still need to buy a new holder and gear though and that's just $70 I just don't want to spend more money on a VSS that is BRAND NEW!! well..please leave me comments on whether or not you think my ghetto method of holding that plastic bracket will work..

Sounds like you didn't get the sensor aligned corectly. So when you bolted it down you forced it in which snapped the casing.

You cant just weld it because that is probably an aluminum alloy. Very spendy to weld I would Imagine. They do make some platic epoxies that are fairly strong. You might try that.

Your pictures and description dont do well at describing whats broke. Other then the plastic casing.

Your sensor is basically a magnetic pick up. So the sensor needs to sit very close to the teeth that go spinning by. If one side is not bolted down it will cause the sensor to move up and down a little. That is why you see your speedo bouncing.

 

Lucky I scan through here sometimes I guess? If you manage to fix it or if you buy another one you need to be sure the hole is cleaned of crap and old grease. When you put it in twist it back and forth untill it seats against the transmission. Don't ever rely on the bolts to bring a speed sensor down to the transmission.

 

GOOD NEWS!!! I fixed it yesterday! I took off my speed sensor (the plastic part) and noticed that the middle connector in the middle of the pig tail harness that connects to the VSS was partly corroded off, so I cut a wire pretty short and out one end in that and the other end in where the middle pin is on the VSS...so that made it work! I didn't really hold it with anything to the connector or the VSS. I just used it more of a temporary solution until I can buy the harness from the dealer. Also, I just used it to see if the harness was the culprit. Anybody have any tutorials on how to replace the pic tail harness? I can't think of any way other than pulling the wires from the back. Thanks for all the info.!!

I will clean the opening around when I have some time and fix the VSS a little better with some plastic bond stuff instead of the crazy glue my dad tried
