Default Speaker problems... Help!

When I got my car, the left front speaker wasn't working... so, after a few months of only rear and right front, I went and bought new speakers for the doors.

Problem 1: after taking everything apart, I find that the speaker is not dead. It seems there's something wrong in the wiring between the radio and the door speaker. I need help with chasing down this problem. any idea?

Problem 2: Speakers I got are Boston 6.5". I am assuming I have to trim the door panel to fit? what about stock grills? they seem a bit on the tight side (factory speakers are only 6.25"??) Also, what do you guys use for the wiring? any adapters for the door speaker? or just cut them off and put some regular ends?

Radio is Panasonic CD unit with adapter plug between unit and factory harness (I checked it with multimeter, no problems in there). Car is 96 Civic CX.

Thanks!
