question about disassembling boston 3-ways
ok guys a buddy of mine recently blew one of his boston pro-series 3-way 6x9's. but the thing is only the woofer on it blew, the other one is perfectly fine. is there a way i can just use the midrange and tweeter and discard the woofer? he said he would just give them to me. I was thinking maybe cutting the tweeter and midrange off with a dremel since its on the little pole and elevated enough above the woofer where i can cut it off wittout doing any damage. Then just solder some new wires to the existing wires on the speaker and run them to an amp and buy a seperate mid-bass driver to go in the door.
I'm thinking i'm gonna need a 3-way crossover. correct? what would be a pretty good frequency for each driver to run them? should i run them all off two channels on the amp (R & L)? or run the tweeter and midrange off of two channels and the mid-bass driver off of another two channels? because my friend will sell me his MTX blue thunder 4 channel amp for like $75 as soon as he gets back from marines boot camp in a few weeks. it pushes around 100 watts per channel i believe at 4 ohms.
i was planning on fabricating a custom bracket to mount it to my door panel and moulding it in to look nice with a little fiberglass.
does anyone have any suggestion as to where to mount the tweeter and midrange besides the door panel?
Does this sound like a good idea? considering he's gonna give me the speakers for free.

To be honest, there's no real reason that I see to do this.
Sure you got them for free, but those mids on the three way's are not going to play that low, so regardless of where you put them, you will still want a mid that is going to play high.
This means that most of your midrange is still going to be coming from your door's, so you really have not gained that much....
again, that's just my opinion. Seems like a lot of work, for a less then ideal situation.
