to run or not to run a amp...
Hello,
I'm new to the audio scene so I know next to nothing. I recently purchased 2 sets of Pioneer TS-A1682R 4-way speakers for about 40 shipped. I have a Pioneer DEH-6800mp deck that runs 50wx4 mosfet. I'm looking to get a crisp sound and mild bass, hopefully these will do the trick.
Would I need to run a amp for these speakers? If so how much watts should I look for? I'm planning on buying a old rockford fosgate 120a2 that has a 280watt rms, will this be enough to run 4 speakers?
thanks for any help.

Do not run 4 of those off the headunit. It will create too much heat and eventually kill it. Plus it will not offer the midbass you ask for. The 120a2 is only 2x30watts @ 4ohms; you can run it in 2ohms and gain twice the power, but lose some sound quality. 2x30 is just below what is needed for 2 speakers. You might be able to get by cheaply by using the headunit for 2 and the amp for 2. But personally I would buy an amp like this or the next step up http://www.crutchfield.com/App...p=115 . Goodluck
First, are you sure about the model number, I can find TS-A1672R, [3way] and TS-A1782R, [4way] but no TS-A1682R speakers at Pioneers site... TS-A1072R

Second. whatever they are, there is no reason you can't run all 4 off the HU.
At most they will be 50W continuous, [RMS] speakers but the HU will be much less, [4x22W RMS] so an amp, [4x50W-4x75W RMS into 4 ohms] would be best.
The linked Alpine amp, [4x40W RMS into 4 ohms is a little underpowered but would still be a lot better then HU power.
The other issue is speaker size, your speaker is an over-sized 6.5", [6.75"] and will not fit without mods, [assuming car is a Honda/Acura] your car uses standard 6.5" speakers.
The above is an issue as SQ, [sound quality], espesally bass response, is directly related to the speaker install.
