power off sub thump
93 Civic, alpine deck, infinity basslink II (sub/amp combo)
My basslink II is a little over a year old and has always worked fine and sounded great. Now a few days ago it started this stupid ****. When I pull the key out, it makes a loud thump. It still does it with the RCAs unplugged. I disconnected the remote wire to the deck and jumpered the amp's remote turn on to the amps constant. When I remove power from the remote turn on, it thumps.
The amp is connected directly to the trunk mounted battery, power and ground. The battery is grounded to each of the frame rails with 4 gauge wire. Power is ran to the starter with 4 gauge wire.
I guess this thing has taken a **** after just over a year of light usage? Anyone ever dealt with Infinity's warranty dept?

It's like back in the day when you weren't cool unless you had some killer turn-on thump... It let everyone know that you had a bumpin' system...
Then, they came out with this "soft turn on" crap... No one knew what you had anymore, so alot of guys lost out on the poon...
Consider yourself lucky, guy... It's like a gift from God... In reverse.... LOL

Look for a bad cap in amps power supply, possibly a cold solder connection in the ground circuit of the PC board.
I have never had a problem with Infinity's warranty dept., but then again I am in CANADA EH.

One of the few (very few) reasons I really really miss working there...
Devo & free/almost free Dynex batteries FTW!!

We carry the Basslink I and not the II.
I'll look for my warranty papers (probably expired) and then I'll try what fcm said. Sounds do-able, but in the past any time I looked at a circuit board trying to find something obvious, I felt like a caveman.
Aw, ****. I said something racist again. Sorry! I'm sorry!

I am a nerd.

Unless you posted this before you talked to me. Again...Like I told you before, the amp has shorted an inductor. When an inductor in a filter network shorts, it supplies a pure ground to the VCC path. It may not be much current, but it senses that ground across a capacitor in the network and then it discharges. Behold the thump. From what you told me earlier that is the only explanation that I can come up with. Hence the bad crossover we experienced today. Pop the speakers and you only heard a buzzing sound is an open inductor, charging the capacitor and the inductor has no path to ground. Replace that Bitch.
BTW I love that Basslink II, it sounds amazing in an extended cab pickup or a hatchback. Nice and tight bass.

Yes, I did. Farmer, look at the timestamp. But are you ******* drunk? You didn't say anything about an inductor. Did I hit my head or something? I don't remember us talking about it to any great length.
That Jetta probably just has the woofer disconnected or grounded.

Anywhere there is a power or filter network, bring it to work. Look for wire coiled up small or large usually in the shunt path of a filter network.
