New System.. Sudden Distortion. Please Help
Set Up: 91 civic
Pioneer head unit
Powerbass EQ
1.2 Farad Capacitor -Tsunami
4 Channel Pioneer Amp -650W
Mono Pioneer amp-800W
10" Alpine typeR Sub
(4) 6.5 alpine typeR speakers(all around)
Story: So in January I got around to installing my system and everything ran great for about 3 weeks. Great sound, no distortion, and it hit real smooth.
Suddenly, the sub started cutting out, but I thought "no big deal.. ill look at it later" and i turned the sub off.. later that week, I turned the car off one night.. speakers sounding great.. and when I turned it on the next morning.. the speakers sounded horrible. They still play music, but it sounds really distorted.. i couldnt have blown them Because the amp doesnt put out enough power to do so..
I think the Sub issue has to due with the signal wire.. But i am really stumped on the speaker issue.. I rechecked all rca's.. no wires are loose.. and both amps get power.. grounds are fine.. deck works great.. IDK.
any help is appreciated!
Thanks in advance!

i believe you can blow the speakers if they are underpowered. in fact, it can be easier to blow the speakers when they are underpowered(depending) than if they were running at the rated RMS or a bit overpowered.
what is the models of the pioneer amps?
what gauge power and ground cables are you running?
how long are the ground cables? where are they grounded?

Interesting, thanks for the info. I am using 4GA power and ground cables. the grounds are no longer than a foot each and are fastened to the chassis (paint sanded down to bare metal) . the amp models can be seen here 4 channel: http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/PU...eries/GM-6300F Mono: http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/PU...ries/GM-D7400M but I find it weird that they were working great when I turned the car off.. and are possibly "blown" when I turn it back on?
Thanks for the help by the way

Okay so I narrowed it down a bit. first, I conected a new pair of 6.5 typeR speakers to the back and they were also distorted.. so i took those out. THEN I took the rca cables from the deck that go to the EQ and pluged them directly into the channel A inputs on the 4 chanel (bypassed the EQ alltogether).. turned the deck on and whala! the front speakers were back to normal and they sounded great.
So now I have a new question. Should I get a new EQ? and the reason I ask is because I dont know why it would be broken.. I have used this exact EQ for a system prior to this one and it never had any problems.. the eq even has a fuse and all it does is direct the signal to the different outputs so I dont know what to think.
again. all help is appreciated!
thanks -Chris

Get rid of the EQ.
Both your amps are underpowered, the mono block is only 1x400W RMS into 2 ohms the sub is 500W continuous, [this assumes your sub is a DVC 4 ohm wired in parallel] the 4ch is 4x60W RMS into 4 ohms the Alpine Type R speakers are 100W continuous, [110W continuous for the 2way components]. 94

thanks for the info. and yea I know I can get more power if I need it.. But in my little car, my setup does just fine. I have my sub wired up for 4 ohms right now (its not necessary to go to 2.. but I could if I wanted) and the mono block is actually tuned down from what it could be at (safely). the speakers are also tuned down a bit to my liking. The EQ doesnt rob me of any power as there is no power going through it. I like having it though because I can control every little aspect of the pitch to where I want it (depending on the song) and I can turn the sub off if I want which sometimes I do. thanks for the info though
