Moving the ECU...
Have any of you done this before? What was involved? Did you just stick it under the dash, or did you do a complete relocation (modding wiring harness and all)? I'm going to build a set of kicks for my civic, and I was just looking for some advice before I dive in.
Thanks.
Thanks.
In my civic, I just undid all of the loom and wiring ties, etc, and I was able to relocate the ECU to the firewall. There's a lot of slack in the cable. You could also pretty easily make a mount to have it installed parallel to the floor with some aluminium bar stock.
While you are down there you should consider some underdash panels....

Yeah, if you cut back the plastic covering on the wire and untangle the mess of wiring, there is enough slack to mount it to the firewall..
If you want to put it some where else you will have to do something else..

im guessing that rcurley meant to make some panels so the sound wavelengths reflect from them and not straight into the dash.
anyhow, im building some kick panels as well right now and all i did with the ecu was take apart everything that held it, and moved it against the firewall behind the carpet.

The whole goal of an sq setup (like a kickpanel setup) is to reduce point sources....reflections are typically a bad thing. This is why you will find that a lot of SQ cars (on of the Marks - Ligget or Eldridge) is pretty well known for using lots of absorbtive material - especially behind the listening area to quell reflections.
It also keeps sound from traveling up the dash. Ther was a thread about this on carsound.com not too long ago in the competition area....a quick search and you will see what I mean.
The bottom line is that it's more of an experimentation then a science, but it can be worth while.
did that make ANY sense - I'm feeling slow today...
