jl or eclipse?
alright, i want 3 10's for a custom enclosure and did a search already. i have had 2 10 jl wo's and liked them. but i want something different fora custom setup. i just looked at eclipse aluminum dual coil series and liked them too. well im still trying to figure out if i want 3 10's 2 10's 1 12" or what. its between eclipse and jl. i was thinking w3's or the eclipses. i also dont want crazy heavy subs. what do you guys think?
well first you say you want three tens
then you say you dont know if you want 3 tens, 2 tens, or 1 twelve
assuming the same line of subs...
3 tens and 2 twelves would be the most comparable setups
2 tens will be next
and one 12 will have the least cone area
as far as eclipse aluminums vs. jl W3s...
eclipse alum's like power... and a civic alternator doesnt exactly put out a ton of power so i would shy away from trying to run 3 eclipse aluminums
the W3's like a good 300 watts if not more as well though so you're not going low power either way.
if it were me i think i would go with either 2 10W3's with around 600 watts, or possible one 12" eclipse alum. with 6-800 watts, or possibly one 12W3 ported with around 400 watts.
hope that helps

i just get a boner thinkin bout 3 10's and how they would look dished in the wheel well. i like the way the eclipse pounded too, so i might stick w/ a 12 and get a nice 800watt amp. whats the deal w/ the power prob? would i need a cap? i just want a real nice setup w/ a nice tight bass not a ported obnoxious 12, i hate that
I'm getting a JL 12W7 and hooking up an Arc 1500dr that puts out 1000 watts. My friend put his JL in my trunk with 500 watts and it thumped like hell!!!! I'll post pics of my install when completed in a few weeks. I'll also have a 1 farad cap and upgrading my battery to an SVR deep cycle.
well man read a physics textbook...
stuff like
V=I*R
and
P=I*V
then you'll understand. also read up on what your altenator is all about, and on amp efficiency.
basically you'd be using more power for you subs than your car's alternator is putting out total... and no a cap wont help.
and a ported enclosure isn't obnoxious at all. if done right they can sound better than sealed.

I was trying to deceide between a pair of 10W3s or a single 88120DVC to go with a Xtant 301a. I ended going with the Eclipse because it looks pretty. You can't go wrong either way since they are both good choices. It just depends on the enclosure you put them in.
I must admit that all I know about Eclipse is that they make good head units. I do know however that JL is not over rated. They make clean high quality ****. I had a single JL 10W3 in my crx and that **** hit hard with only 350 watts running to it. Two tens would be pleanty and he JL 500/1 should be more than enough power to power to JL 10W3s. 10s hit quick and clean but 12s hit the low bass. So it depends what kind of music you listen to. If you listen to just rap, a phatty 12W3 or even a 12W6 would be great. But 10s will be great for any type of music.
I would go Eclipse for sound quality if you have the $$$ for them and the power to push them. The last Eclipse sub I installed Amazed me with it's clarity. where most subs just produce a loud thump, You could accually hear distinct musical notes in the low frequencies with the Eclipses. You will need a very large Amp to push them though, and you will need to upgrade to a larger alternator to run the amp. Don't go with a "class D" amp though because the class D will make the bass monotone just like any other sub, then it's not worth it. Of course if you just want loud, and don't care about the Quality of sound, go with whatever you want. The right amp / enclosure can make any sub loud.
