when i turn the volume up on my head unit the subs will shut down like they have no power but the amp is still on. all the speakers in the car still work fine but the subs just shout down.

also if i turn the headunit off then back on the subs will turn back on untill the subs start i hit then they shut down again.

 

Sounds like amp is going into "protection mode".

alpine subs and amp. i am not sure of the model its my gf car so i cant even check right now. i am wondering if the ground and power wire are not large enough.

Hi, There could be a couple of reason it would go into protection mode. One is the ground and the other one is the way you wire you subwoofers.

 

just like fcm said...your amp may be in protection mode. If the amp is running at a lower impedance than normal, it will do that. For example, a while back I was running a Punch 100DSM on a JL Audio 12w4...running at 4 Ohms mono. When I replaced the sub for a 12w6, I ran the amp at 3 Ohms mono. It played for a bit and then it shut off. That may be your problem also.

 

the ground and every thing is good i know that. so how should the sub's be wired. right know i have them briged? i am not sure how you would change the Ohms. i am a real *** to systems.

 

You do not bridge the subs, you bridge the amp, the subs are wired in parallel or in series, or a combination of both parallel and series.

When you wire in parallel the impedance, [ohms] drops, EG; two 4 ohm speakers wired in parallel is a 2 ohm "final" load, wire the same two speakers in series and the impedance will be 8 ohms "final" load.

If you have DVC, [dual voice coil] subs you may want to wire them in a combination of both parallel and series, EGl; you have two DVC 4 ohm subs, you would wire the VCs on each sub in series, [4+4 in parallel=8] for an 8 ohm load, then wire the two subs in parallel, [8+8 in series=4] for a "final" load of 4 ohms.

That is why we need the model number of the subs and how they are wired.

If you have a 2ch Alpine amp and it is bridged into mono, [1 channel] it is not stable below 4 ohms, so if the subs are wired to below 4 ohms the amp will over-heat and the amps thermal protection circuit will cut in an turn off the amps output stage to protect it, that will happen a lot quicker at higher volume levels. 94

 

you could also possibly have a dead short in your sub. try a different sub.

 

oh damn I have that problem too on my subs and they are bridge. I have a 2000 2ch amp running two alpine type s 900 watts each and 300-500 rms on each. which they are bridged into .5 ohms. that aint good is it? because my subs keep shutting down if I bump it too loud. we have the same problem dude just try to run each sub on each channel ima try that too.

Alpine makes 4 Type S subs, [two 12" and two 10"] in DVC 4 ohm and DVC 2 ohm, which ones do you have?

BTW they are 300W continuous, [RMS] not "300-500 rms", Power Range is 50-300 watts.

With DVC 4 ohms two of them can be wired to 1 ohm 4 ohms or 16 ohms.
With DVC 2 ohms two of them can be wired to .5 ohms 2 ohms or 8 ohms.

It sounds like you have DVC 2 ohms wired in parallel/parallel, [.5 ohms], it is unlikely your 2ch amp is stable below 4 ohms when bridged, much less .5 ohms.

Wiring one sub to each channel of the amp may be your only option, but it is not the best way to drive two subs.

i do not under stand all the ome stuff like i said im new to the system thing. if it dont run i can fix it but this is not my thing.

right know i have the two subs wired sub + to amp - and sub - to amp + on both

Anyway they are DVC 4 ohm subs, and should be wired series/parallel, wire the VCs of each sub in series, [connect the pos.(+) of one VC to the neg.(-) of the other VC, that will leave to with the neg.(-) of one VC and the pos.(+) of the other VC] that will be an 8 ohm impedance on each sub, then wire the two subs together in parallel, [the two pos.(+) together and the two neg.(-) together] to the amp.

Use 2 DVC drivers with Voice Coils in Series / Parallel.

The amp you have now is way under-powered, you have two 400W subs, [800W] on an amp that will make 220W RMS into 4 ohms and is not stable below 2 ohms.

ya i know i went to the car and looked at the subs and amp ant they are both infinty before i took my big amp out. my bad. but thanks for all your help.
