Amp backfire
I've had this problem since I bought the car. When I turn on the stereo the amp makes a really, really loud backfire noise through all the speakers it's hooked up to. I've tried changing the ground points, nothing...
Any ideas anyone? It's annoying starting up the car and hearing 'wha-WHUMPH'

What amp is it? I noticed that type of a problem when the amp turns off after the HU like when using those speaker to rca converters and the acc wire to signal the amp. Check to see if the amp shuts off after the HU goes off.....
It's a Blaupunkt BMA200 amp. I'll check to see if it turns off after... I have noticed that it seems to fade out rather than just abruptly turn off.
I've got a switch between the HU and the amp (intersecting the remote wire) so I can toggle the amp on/off, if that makes any difference.

I didn't see the bottom statement where it happens when you start the car. If it is, in fact, hooked through a switch and to the amp signal in the HU, it is possible that there is no cure. On my integra (ex integra), I noticed when I go from "acc" to "on" in the ignition, my HU turns off then back on, same as on to acc. My girlfriend's integ didn't do the same thing. Check if your HU does it, cuts off between acc-on-start and on-acc transitions. That burping sound is from the hu powering up while the amp is still on. If the problem really bothers you, and you notice that the HU goes off between ignition transitions and the amp stays on a bit longer, I have a reccomendation for you.......
If the problem is like a THUD when you turn the car off with the amp still on, your problem is most likely a bad ground.
I have a switch hooked up the same way you do. And it doesn't cause this.
If the amp is thudding when it is turned on I'm not to sure, i've never had this problem. With the amp turned on take your fist and hit your dash(seriously) did you here the thud come out of you speakers? If you did then it is most likely a bad connection somewhere along the line. I'd start by checking the wires out of the HU.
Don't know if this will help any, but it can't hurt.

The amp only backfires when I turn it on... and I checked to see if the amp was continuing to stay on after I turned the HU off. It's not
.
It IS an old-***, crappy amp... maybe it's just slowly dying? Half the time it doesn't even turn on when I flip the HU on... it turns on, then turns off again with a minor 'thump' (nowhere near as loud as the one when it's turned on). That's really why I hooked up the switch, so I can flip it off and then on again.
