Default Hardwiring Radar Detector...

im trying to hardwire my V1 radar detector. I cut and stipped the end of the phone cord. a buddy of mine who is an electrician found out that the red is ground and put the black, yellow, and green together and stuck them in with the fuse. it turns on when i turn the key and goes through the startup routine, however it doesnt stay on... any ideas?

EDIT: can i cut my cig light wires (black and yellow with green stripe), and just connect the black, yellow, and green from the phone cord to the yellow w/ green stripe from the cig lighter? and then connect the red to the black wire? or just attach red to a ground point?

lol... That's funny...

Did you take the plug apart before you cut and verifiy that the black yellow and green were common in the plug? I bet you didn't, and I bet they aren't....

I don't know anything about V1's, but I'm sure those other two wires (not power and ground) serve a purpose and weren't designed to be connected to 12v all the time...

Edit: I just did a quick google search (not sure why you couldn't have), and every V1 hardwire I see has only the red and black hooked up. I just hope you didn't damage something by feeding 12v into those other 2 wires...

Disconnect the other 2 and leave the red and black hooked up and see what happens.

Yeah Im not to familiar with the valantine radars either but the Escort also have the same four wires and you only use the black and red. The other 2 wire are for other functions. I know on the escort you can get a power plug with a mute button on the end of the plug so im assuming thats what those wires are for. You should only need the black and red. I hope you didnt screw somthing up by connecting those other wires to 12V

I havent connected anything to 12v yet, it still works and functions fine. i wanted to ask first. alright, so lets just assume its red and black now. red=hot black=ground. do i just cut my 2 wires going to the cig lighter, connect the black with the black and the red with the other wire?

yeah pretty much, the 12v wire will be the wire coming off the center piece of the cig lighter. the ground will be the wire connected to the large metal cylinder. Those wire inside that power cable for the radar are going to extreamly thin. Make sure you solder the wires and use like a zip tie to secure the connection because if you have even a little bit of tension on that connection the wire will break off. Dont cut the wire on your cig lighter you just strip back the coating on the wire dont cut the wire its self.

i also have a question about this, i hard wired my radar detector into my power mirrors so that it is ignition hot and turns on and off with the car. the only problem i am having is that when the car is cold and i rev over 2K rpms, the radar detector goes crazy flashing all the lights and beeping for a couple seconds then goes off unless i am still above 2K. once the car warms up, its fine. anyone have any ideas?

Why would you tie it into your power mirrors? Im not sure what the problem is bad ground mabey? Try rewiring it to your cig lighter or to the ignition harness.

i wired to my mirrors because it is ignition hot so it goes on and off with my car. the weird thing is though, it doesnt happen in the summer. only when it is cold outside and when the car is cold. i have no idea
