Ground Loop....or is it??
Okay so here's the deal. I have, in my civic,
Alpine HU (forget the model number, simple CD head unit, few years old)
Hifonics 440 watt 4 ch amp
Hi fonics 40 watt sub amp
JL 12w7 in sealed box
MB quart 6.5" components front
Infinity perfect 6x9" rears
So i took this Pioneer AVIC N3 from my sister haha(i told her i would put it in her car, but it sat around long enough i think she forgot about it) and i wired it up to put it in my civic.
Got it all working but when i powered it up there is a ridiculously loud feedback noise. Kinda hard to explain, but the kinda of shhhhhh sound you get when you have the volume on your stereo all the way up but with no music playing.....i think thats the best way to explain it. That is without the car on.....THENNN when you start the car there is a horrible loud *** ground loop, you can hear the high pitched whistling that increases with revs.....
But I don;t think it is a direct grounding problem because of what I explained before......when the car is off you still hear that shhhh. It sounds like the volume is all the way up on the HU when it is in fact at zero. Also, I have the ipod interface so i played music through the ipod and the sound quality is no where near as good as with my alpine face with direct ipod connection.
Please give some insight as to what it could be, because i threw the alpine back in, but would love the nav features of the n3!!!!!
p.s.and some crappy wire to wire it......but just to put this in prespective, this is my beater, i don't have any $$ to spend on expensive *** wire, and it sounds perfectly clear right now with my alpine, so don't tell me it's the wire!!!

Pioneer are notorious for having bad grounds. They bias the floating rca ground.
You could try tearing the pioneer apart and strapping the RCA ground to chassis ground. Just hook a wire from the circuit board RCA ground to the main input ground.

something i can't do from the outside of the unit? i d k i can build motors all day and do anything else, but with my big hands i'm not the best with circuitry and the tiny stuff. . . .

You can add a ground strap from the outside case and wrap it around the RCA ground terminals. This is seriously ghetto rigged and may not work.
