Fried head unit?
Hey I've got a JVC SS-13 or something like that.. but here's the problem.... i disconnect my amp (power, ground) the remote from the amp to the head unit is still connected... but i leave the battery connected!(IDIOT)
WELL, when i'm hooking the ground back on i smell smoke and i look towards the head unit and its smoking up! i then disconnect the battery and put everything back on... now the head unit won't go on... have i completely fried it? if i did then i'll get a new one... if not what do i need to change?i'm kinda pissed at it but the head unit was free.. amp's located underneath the passenger seat and subs are in the trunk of my DA.
any help would be AWSUM!

You have burnt the signal return, [signal ground] trace on the circuit board in the HU for the set of RCAs you have the amp connected to.
If the HU has another set of RCA outputs, connect the amp to them, and cross your fingers.

BTW, do not install the fuse in the amps power lead until all other connections are made.

Cool thanks, I don't really know what I must check.. I DO but at the same time I DON'T.. hope i make sense haha. But I'll get my friend to check it out he's good withthis stuff..
There is nothing to check, just unplug the RCAs, [from the back of the HU] and plug them into another set of outputs, if the problem is burnt ground traces, switching the RCAs will get the amp working again, [get a signal to the amp].

hmm but nothing should be wrong with the amp? it could just be the deck? btw the deck does not have another set of outputs.. just 2. how do i just get power to the deck
Normally it is the traces in the HU that go as the ones in the amp are "heavier".
Unfortunately if your HU only has one set of pre-outs obviously you can't try another set, you will have to hook up another HU to find out if it is a HU problem or an amp problem.

Hey what a cool site. Well I went out and bought the Alpine CDE-9874 w/ the full speed connection wire for the ipod. Came out to $189. He was asking me about the harness for the deck.. What does this mean? Can I use the harness from the deck I fried? Its a JVC KD-S13, and well yeah you've been nothing but help to me fcm thank's!
You can not use the JVC harness, he may have meant the adapter harness, the one that plugs into the stock radio harness.
If the JVC harness is connected to an adapter harness you can connect the Alpine harness to that adapter harness, if there is no adapter harness you will have to remove the JVC harness and "hard-wire" the Alpine harness to the stock radio wiring.
