Default Amping Speakers!

Hello, i'm thinking of amping my speakers soon. Could someone link me to a tutorial or directions on how to do it myself? I have a Civic 05' LX. Also, does an AMP just make speakers louder? Or does it have some other advantages? My speakers go up to 220 watt speakers. What kind of amp should I get for them? All I have is a radio that puts out 4x45 watts i think. Any suggestions or help with this would be great! Its my first amp install!

an amp does more than just make your speakers louder. it'll make them sound more accurate and crisp across the entire range at the same volume. what kind of speakers are they? if they max out at 220 watts, i'd assume the RMS power is right around 110 watts or so. with that in mind, you'd want an amp that can put out right around that much power per channel give or take. just to give you an idea, the deck power most likely does not produce 45 watts per channel. its usually anywhere between 14-18 watts of continuous power. so jumping from 14-18 watts per channel to around a 100 watts per channel is as different as night and day.

Awesome. Amping sounds like something I want!

Here's the speakers I got.

Pioneer TS-A1672R 3-Way 220-Watt Speaker

Here's the head unit I got.

Pioneer DEH-P3000IB

Installed both myself..

your speakers are 5-35watts rms (continuous) putting a small amp on it would be a good idea you'll get less distortion as well

when you amp them make sure to get a amp the makes 35 or 40 watts
try to under power them
under powerd speakers blow a lot more the over powerd

pyramid is a flea market special amp, complete garbage. i have had good luck with alpine, eclipse, mtx, ppi, kicker and rockford fosgate amps.

since you only have speakers that takee 35w rms, maybe a kenwood or sony would be fine

I would upgrade the speakers before adding an amp to them, as mentioned your speakers are rated at 35W continuous, your HU is 4x22W RMS into 4 ohms, installing a 40W RMS amp to drive the speakers will about double the wattage to them, that will be about a 3dB gain in output, just enough to notice that speaker is louder, maybe.

Not worth it IMO, no enough of an increase in power to make any real diff. in output or SQ. 94

Damn seriously? I just installed those speakers so I don't think I want to replace them already. I guess amping will have to wait then. Thanks for the info guys!

What I would do, if not already done, is rewire the HUs constant power and "beef up" the ground.

The constant power and ground leads in the stock radio harness are not capable of supplying the current your HU needs to produce it's rated RMS power.

Do the following and you should notice an increase in volume and clarity...

Run a fused 12ga power lead directly from the batt to behind the HU and connect the HUs constant power, [yellow] to it, don't forget to cap off the now unused stock radio harness constant power.

Run a 12ga chassis to chassis ground, leave the HUs ground connected to the stock radio harness ground and add a 12ga ground lead from the chassis of the HU to the cars chassis, dash sub frame will work.
If the HU is mounted to the metal brackets that held the stock HU in place, beefing up the ground is not needed as there already is a chassis to chassis ground. 94

Never heard of this method.. if you think it'll make a worthwhile difference i'll try it out. Quick question though, I thought 220 watts was a lot.. but it seems according to you guys that it's the continuous rms that's important. If I got an amp for what I have now... would it blow my speakers out or something?

the 220 you see on the speaker is max power and yes rms is whats important when amping you speakers.
what you could do is run an amp thats 40 watts rms to each speaker.
the sound will be cleaner and sound better.
