Alpine is crap!!
[rant]
i'm done with alpine. their quality sucks. I have THREE alpine decks right now, in which all are retailed for at least $500, went down the gutter.
even the almighty cda-7969 that retails for $1,200 went to ****.
Sadly to say, my aunt's sony deck right now has no glitch while my headunits have SOMETHING wrong with it.
unless alpine can show me a quality headunit without busting out $2000+ like their cda-7990, I will stay away from alpine decks.
but if u have no problems with alpine, consider yourself lucky, or if u have the new models, wait a few more years.
and i doubt it's a bad deck out of 45345 ones they made because almost all the people i know (with the 7969) has the same problem..u know..face won't go in, dead pixels, skips, etc
Alpine does not even have an email address, but they do have a repair center though. then again, stephan ponte sent out his 7969 and didn't get it back after months of toture.
for christsakes....spend less on the pretty colors and actually hire a quality control team, a good one i might add. and it would't hurt to have someone to answer emails!!
Goodbye Alpine, hello ATF KUK's headunit

wow, i can't beleive you just dissed alpine and said a sony was good. Not even so much that you dissed alpine, but you said SONY WAS GOOD! lol.
go eclipse my man, quality control out the butt. never heard anyone complain about them.
i use alpine and i like em. little rediculous on some of the features, AKA would like MP3 playing ability without time correction and bass focus and all the ish, for affordability, but hey some people like all that stuff.

Finally another converts from the dark side. Alpine is crap. I have know it for years and years. Still love sony... the mobile ES series that is. Only problem I have had with my c90 is the rotary commander breaks all the time. Thank God for extended warranty and the Sony repair shop having like 3 of them in stock all the time for me. Down time on the broken remote is like 24 hours.

Could you provide more details like the model numbers in question (e.g. 7969), what exactly failed in each, and the length of time before failure occured?
My first Alpine, a 7842 from over 5 years ago, started to skip after 3 years of use which I attributed to a ventilation problem. However, I've owned 3 Alpines since (9805, 9811, currently 9835) and never had a problem with any of them. I'll keep my fingers crossed.

cda-7850 (mechanism defect. i hate it)
cda-7965 (when in CD mode, RCA only plays high freq and sometims only the R channel and not the L.)
cda-7969 (dead pixels, won't turn on, i'm gonna set it on fire)
1 internal amp hu
2 non-internal amp hu
well i was done with alpine a long time ago, but i figured the 7969 was a high quality deck and that alpine might have a different standard for the higher-end. but i guess i was wrong.
the 7850 stopped working like after maybe 5 years? the 7965 has been babied and has basically no scratch on the face. its a 2000 deck and it crapped out this summer, so 4 years? the 7969 went bogus last year..so 3 years?

i might try eclipse if i can findo ne for the right price, but i prefer the looks of nakamichi or denon/rockford rfx-8240/8250.

i want to get the nak, but repair on them sucks. my buddy had a cd-40z the stopped reading CDs so he sent it in. He waited 6 months and didn't get his deck back, so he gave up and bought a pioneer. lol

How long do head units typically last for? Do alot of users get more than 3-5 years of trouble free use out a HU, be it Alpine, Eclipse, Pioneer, etc? With the exception of one, I've never owned a single HU for more than 1 year before upgrading. Therefore, I don't really have alot of experience in their long-term reliablity.
I have seen some head units last for about 7 years. Crazy old pioneers, and I also have seen the first run of the Sony Mobile ES series still going strong. My friend has transfer his mobile ES sony (forgot model number) into about 5 cars. That deck has been around a long time, plays cd and cd-r no problem, doesn't skip, and all functions still work on the deck. Go figure.
Wow! My 7969 works perfectly! I got it for free because they couldn't fix my 7949 a couple of years ago and I bitched my head off to them.
Sorry to hear you're having such bad luck with them.

I think the quality on all the stereos is going down hill. I think the trend is the ricer trend now so people spend less on audio. That along with people are just tired of getting sh*# ripped off so they just buy cheap crap now.
I actually miss the Sony ES line when ES actually meant something.
My sony mdx-400 still works and it is 11 years old.

yea. more electronic BS=more trouble when it breaks
I'm thinking of recording myself lighting up the 7969 on fire and then send a copy to alpine

sony is crap is all ive heard about all of their products in car audio... which is wierd considering all of their other stuff kicks ***....
Anyways.... I hear great things about Kenwood, Pioneer, and JBL products... I have all Kenwood Excelon and I couldnt be happier. They work flawlessly, sound spectacularly clear and full, and have only had one glitch when my car's battery decided to lose charge for a little while.. it was wierd... anyways, one reset button press, and its all good.

When i have another bonfire, i'll make sure i bring the alpine and make a ritual out of it. fry it up and keep the ash in a pot and smoke it later on.
i don't know wtf i'm talking about

3-5 years out of a HU is good for me...but I could see how that might frustrate some people
If you get sony at least go to best buy and buy the service plan on it, because they do break about every 2-3 years...my friend realizes this and has gotten 2 HU replaced for close to free because of the 3 year service plan he buys
I have 2 kenwood decks and my brother has 1......2 of teh decks are 5 years old and still strong and the other is pratically new so kenwood
