Pager systems in general are for your peace of mind. They have limited range because of the low output power of the transmitter that's based in the car. Pager systems are more effective in open areas vs. malls, parking garages, buildings, etc. (concrete tends to interfere with RF signals).

The sales rep was trying to say that if you aren't within hearing distance of the alarm's siren, you can't get there in time to catch the thief in the act. In addition, you might be responding to a lot of false alarms if your shock sensor is set to be too sensitive. Parking garages are a problem because the floor tends to shake as cars drive by.

IMO, the more security and peace of mind the better. Sometimes shops discourage buyers from getting certain features because they don't have faith in their installer to make it work properly. I used do it all the time when I worked in the industry because I knew what my installers could and couldn't do. Get the pager if you really want it. Just make sure the installer knows how to install it properly.

i have the alpine pager and overall it is OK. it is only limited to about .5 mile. and if you're in a building as stated in the previous post, you have the interference of the transmission due to concrete and other electronics in the building. you don't have to necessarily be at a hearing distance. but the transmission lags to about 2-3 seconds after the alarm goes off. and it is cool because of the indication of what went off through the use of green and red lights and numbers for each sector violated.

the AutoPager alarrm pager seems to be the best one out there. With their extended range antenna, the range of the pager more than triples. I know this by testing it on my old car.

how much is the pager you're talking about? is the extended antenna a cb antenna? or one big *** ugly looking antenna?

I don't know how much it is - you'd have to talk to your local installer about that. There are 2 kinds of antennas for them. One is just a small strip that attaches to the very top of the inside of your windsheild where neither you or anyone else will know about it.

The other - and the route that I'm taking - consists of a separate box that connects to your factory antenna and when the alarm goes off, the antenna rises and it pages you.

You can usually get a general Idea of what these would cost on ebay - and remember that if you have these installed, alarm items typically get installed for half of whatever they cost retail.

what is the range as far as the antenna that attaches to the windshield goes? i have the alpine pager and it also uses the factory antenna to transmit the page. for the power antennas, it functions the exact same way you described.
