2 deck wiring question
I have a single CD deck on the car. I was wondering if I can hook up an old cassette deck below it where the bid is. How would I wire it? Do I just slick and hook up the cass. deck wiring to the CD deck? Do I need to make a switch for it? if so, how?
a friend of mine did this between a stock tape deck and an aftermarket cd player. pretty slick. in a corolla, i think...
You need a mad amount of relays though. ( sounds CRAZY when you switch from deck to deck )
the slave deck will be the trigger for the relays to switch speaker output from deck "A" ( the one in the car that is working now) to the slave (deck "B").
-------------------------------------------------------------------
So wire up "b" so it has +12 constant, acc, and ground...
---------------
now here's where it gets tricky:
you will need 2 relays (spdt's) for for each speaker output ( one for the + wire, and one for the - wire)
if deck "b" has a remote turn on lead (blue wire that is +12 only when the deck is on) ,this will be your + trigger for all of you speaker relays ( if not just wire a switch to fused 12+ volts and use it)
It's ( the turn on lead) not going to be strong enough to trip 8 relays ( assuming 4 speakers)
so you'll need to another relay there:
85 to the turn on wire
86 to ground
87 to a fused constant +12 volts) get this from the fuse box, not at the deck wires)
30: this is going to trigger your speaker wire relays....
---------------------------------
now, each speaker wire gets done like this:
(do one at a time so you dont sause it up)
Deck "A" is already wired up to the speakers and working so...
at the back of the deck cut a speaker wire.
the side that is still connected to the deck "A" becomes the "deck side" of the wire
the side that is still connected to the speaker becomes the "speaker side"
85: goes to 30 on the relay described above
86: ground (-)
30: goes to the "speaker side" wire
87a goes to the "deck side" wire
87: goes to Deck "B" speaker output
------------------------------------------
So, at rest Deck "A" is on, and plays through the relay bank (which is off at this point)
when deck "b" is turned on, the turn on lead activates the relay bank (this is where the cool sound comes from),
the Deck "A" wiring gets inturrupted ( becasue 87 is now touching 30) and output from deck "B" is allowed to reach the speakers.
--------------------------------
good luck

Thanks for the reply.
wow...I thought it would be a simple wiring to the existing deck. I will have to head out to radio shack later.
I"m a little confuse still. So each speaker has 2 relays and then a relays for wire, ignition, and ground. So total of 11 relays? is that right?
Also, how do I make it goes from deck A to deck B? do I make a switch? if so, how do I wire it?
I'll try to put this in a graph later to see if it'll make senses. Thanks

No, Ground +12V con. and Acc power can be hard wired in with no relays.

very funny....this was the rage when cd players first came on the scene
peeps wanted both...changers were not even on the market.
it was really cool with the camaro/firebird crowd. It became so popular
that da' shack used to sell a switching unit...kinda like an a/b switch.
they were right....wait and trends will reeappear agin.
