Default Spoon Caliper Rstoration

howya's warlovers,

I'm in the process of re-building my b18c eg6 and noticed my spoon twim blocks were looking a little worse for wear

So I decided to re-build them, got them started today,

Firstly I took off the brake line, this is held in with a 14mm bolt, (it wud be wise to crimp your brake line to stop fluid dripping but my system is drained)

Then undo the two 17mm bolts holding the caliper to the carrier.

After this i put my calipers up on the work bench for stripping, you can see they have badly deterioated over the years

Now the fun bit, the pad retention bars are notorious for snapping so be carful when taking these out (mine were a little stiff so sprayed with wd40 and thread in and out a few times) Their held together by a allen key bolt and a nut on the other end (10mm)

Next up is to get the pistons out. Hope to get this done tommorro. Will be using Stephens idea of g-clamps and bloping air in the bleed nipple. Will continue this thread when i have that done.

Colm

Update :

OKay been in the garage all day, pretty much have this finnished now, will post pics up when i get a chance.

Basically what i did was blocked up the 14mm brake line hole with a bolt and scrubbed the caliper with an allow wheel cleaning bush, i used a degraser to clean them, came up as best i could get them.

Then with the bolt in the brake line hole i used 3 vice grips to hold the pistons i didnt want to move.

Then i loosened the brake bleed nut and blew air in it and the free piston popped out, this made one hell of a noise, i reckon it came out at 100mph, one second it was in the caliper,, ext minute it was halfway don the shed ha.

Then to clean the pistons i just used T-Cut on them and the same on the onside of the piston and the cliper its self, i inspected all the pistons, they were all perfect. will post Pics up soon.

Thanks

Colm

spoon calipers dont have dust seals mate. there no point in repainting them as its for a track car, brake dust is just too much. will clean them up as best i can

I had to order a caliper seal kit from Spoon when I rebuilt mine. I only used 1 of the large seals so I have the other 7 remaining if you need any. FYI, Opak sells the rebuild kit for $180 but they don't stock it.
