messys budget EK build
So I just picked this car up recently for fairly cheap. It's got a lot of work done to it already, which I would rather do myself but unfortunately I'm on a tight budget and for the price of all the parts it has, its more worth it to just buy the car already like this. I miss the experience, but I save money for other stuff. Heres a part list for those interested:
- Koni yellow Sports Coilovers
- Buddy Club Rims (White) 205/45 R16 87W Yokohama S drive
- Invidia header/ catback exhaust
- Strut Bar, control arm, tower bar, lower strut bar, rear strut bar
- Alpine DVD player
- Nardi Racing steering wheel
- Some no-name bucket seat (are these things safe?)
- Spoiler
- Oil Temperature gauge
- Water Temperature gauge
The day I picked it up
Today my buddy and I got around to removing the rear lip (which was covered in peeling rattle can paint and other gunk all over it). It was held on by rusty screws, not fun. We ended up having to pry some of the screws out due to the screws stripping as soon as I took a screwdriver to it.
We ended the day with some photos and then removed the stickers that came with the car.
The next project before I drive the thing is to replace all the rusty hardware on the exhaust manifold, as one nut is loose and one bolt is completely missing a nut.

No, but on the back theres some residue from where a label was. Its quite small though. I'm thinking of going to a yard to track down some Si or Integra seats or something, do you know how much they go for there?

Re: messys budget EK build
i usually see regular civic seats front pair for $40. EX/Si seats for $60, SiR seats for $200 front/back
don't know why the difference in DX/LX/CX to EX Si pricing, it's the same seat. perhaps the fabric patterns are different?

I have an SiR, first thing to go were those lousy em1 seats, very little support, don't feel good. Got $150 for them, then paid $100 for a nice clean set up DC2 Integra seats...HUGE upgrade. I've done it on every 96-00 civic since. Worth the time, money and effort swapping the rails, plus sit a little lower giving more head room

Re: messys budget EK build
Moved the car into the shop and picked up some goodies from the pick n pull. It was their last day in business, and the weekend was 50% off.
I got two seats out of an Acura EL, and I pulled the Y8 head out along with ECU as well. Also scooped up a shift **** out of a DA to replace the scratched up aftermarket one for now.
also, I'm a bit lost with doing the actual swap, so please check out my thread here

Except for the seat material, the EL seats are "exactly" the same as civic seats....they sit high and have very small bolsters. Integra seats are very different

Re: messys budget EK build
I know that, but they were only $35 CAD for the pair, and I wanted to get rid of the crappy bucket seat ASAP. When my budget is higher, I'd love to get some Integra seats or even a Corbeau, but these will do for now. I'm not very tall either so I don't need the extra headroom too urgently.

I would highly recommend you get some patch work done on the quarters. The rust is getting out of hand a bit and the longer it goes the worst it gets. Good luck!

Re: messys budget EK build
sure would, looking forward to seeing misty!
thanks, definitely in the plans. how would you recommend going about doing it, would bondo be alright, or should i get some new rear quarters and do something similar to this?
Had a bit of spare time so I pulled the old seats out. The amp wiring and little led light wiring is the next thing out. I'm no specialist but I'm pretty sure this isn't the best way to get wires to the back

Re: messys budget EK build
I personally went with new quarters when I had my rust taken care of. I think I got both sides for around 60 shipped (1996-2003 Civic Hatchback - Rust Repair Panels). hopefully your wheel wells aren't rusted away like mine were.
When I did my amp wiring, I had the inside almost gutted. pulled the trim and carpet out. I ran the power wire down the passenger side, and the rca's and speaker wire down the drivers side (I amped my front door speakers). After I ran it, I used gorilla tape to secure it to the floor so I wouldn't have to worry about it moving around. once secured, I put the carpet and trim back on. no wiring is visible in my car. I did that in my car and truck. definitely makes for a much cleaner install.
in your pic, the power wire and rca's are ran together. that could cause engine noise. its recommended to run them separately in the vehicle.

Unfortunately I bet once you start poking in that rust, it will become a way bigger issue and the quarter(probably part of the rocker too) will need to be replaced.
This is a big job if you have to pay someone to do it. Its time consuming and you must find someone who enjoys it and is not in it for a quick buck.
For whoever does this, I would also recommend sand blasting the area and protecting it from future rust with a rust encapsulator.
Good luck.

Bondo is not a fix for rust, bondo should only be use to blend and finish body work.

Thanks. Ive checked it out already and it didnt look too bad in there. My grandfather and my dad are both experienced welders, and I'm doing a bit here and there so I would not be paying anyone to do it. Probably in the summer I'll get that done

Re: messys budget EK build
Got it back on the road! Seats are in and I always liked the look of cut rear bumpers, so I went for it on mine. Heres a shot I took of my buddy driving my car. The vtec head isn't on yet as I still need time and some parts.
