In the US, the H22A1 is a closed deck block... the H22A4 is an open deck block. If it is a JDM H22, you will need to find the casting date stamp. 1996 and older blocks will be closed and 1997+ blocks will be open.

^ I was under the impression that the Japanese market stuck with the closed deck. Do you have a photo of the date stamp so I know what to look for? I assumed the "97" under my header ports stood for 1997, haha, and mine's closed deck.

1997 is kind of a split year... and there is mixed information regarding the switch from closed to open deck in the JDM and EDM markets. You may have one of those "grey area" blocks that fits this rumor. I know that all JDM/EDM H23A's are open decked, so it is likely that the JDM/EDM H22A went open deck in 1998 for sure as well.
