Hey Guys,
I'm thinking about building my first engine sometime in the spring of '05. I've never built one before but I want to learn how. I don't have alot of mechanical expierence just yet. Everything I've installed on my car has been for the first time. So far I've swapped suspension, and swapped out my stock civic brakes for 4-way teg discs. I consider myself pretty mechanically inclined because I take the time to research the proper methods of installation and what combo of parts work best for my desired application and everything so far has gone smoothly
Anyway, I'd like to built an N/A beast for street use. My car is my daily driver so reliability is my foremost concern.

What I'd like from you all is to point me in the right direction on how to get started with building an engine from the bottom up. Are there any sort of general guides that explain what every part in the engine does and how changing specs of one part would affect another working part? Stuff like that? I'm not looking for what parts work best with each other. I'm just looking for a general overview of how an engine is put together.

Purchase a Helms manual. It'll explain the technical aspect of assembling a stock engine. Very basic and simple first step.

I have a helms manual. I was looking for something more detailed. I'll try and check the library when I go to school tonight.

The helms manual should be just what you are looking for. The only thing that might be better is the actual factory manual. There are TONS of books out on general engine building. I'm sure you'll find some at the library.

I'm not trying to be a dick or anything bro, but seriously, the Helms Factory manual has enough detail in it to put an entire engine together using factory specs. Now if you wanted to look for certain techniques of the trade, it's going to be difficult finding that just in a book, most people don't like sharing certain trade secrets in building an engine. But if you want to tear a motor down and assemble it back to stock, the Helms manual has every single information and spec you need to do so.

I hope you are not mistaking the Factory Helms manual with the Haynes manual.
