My brother and I built a B20 VTEC for my dad's Del Sol.

Stock B16 head and manifolds
Stock B20Z block (stock pistons, no modified valve reliefs)
Stock cam timing
remapped fuel and ignition tables.

Still running strong 50,000 miles later...

i have the perfect pistons for your application...its a set of ROSS racing pistons 85MM bored compression ratio on the pistons are 10.0:1 perfect for daily driven car and you'll still have max power. it use to be in my friends b20 vtec b20b/z block with a GSR head he made 212 hp to the wheel and 151 lbs. of torqe.the pistons are a lil over size for your b20 block but all u have to do is honed it out just 1 mm and the piston will be perfect into your b20 block.the pistons sits on stock LS rod so with the rods would be $500 or without rods $300 obo......

damn people, YOU DO NOT NEED TO TOUCH THE PISTONS, if you are running any kind of OEM honda cam, you will be fine... if you want to run and aftermarket cams, like skunk2, buddy club, jun, toda, knotch the pistons...

Glad to see you got it running, I was just about to post that my b20z/b16 head and gs-r cams milled .020" runs great and 2000miles and counting.

wow.

Anyway, the moral of the story is:

If youre content with stock camshaft power, youll be fine with the pr4/B20 pistons. If you are planning to get the head aggresively milled, install oversize valves, or more aggresive camshafts, you WILL need deeper valve reliefs.

perfect answer

perfectly standard milles head and block it will not matter... i have seen a few milled .030 b16 heads hit pr4 pistons just a little... the car didnt even hesitated till we removed the head and checked the pistons... 15 hits and 7 slightly bent valves. The car ran perfectly nonetheless. GS-R cams btw.

changing the pistons to what??

I'm about to take on a B20/Vtec porject of my own and I need this info also..

RS or Sparks makes cast pistons for the B20 block. dome looks like ITR. those setups work great and make some really good power.

A block gaurd is suppose to sustain the integrity of the cylinders. It has nothing to do with P2V clearance.

You can't trust anything but stock cams on the stock valvetrain. If you plan on revving over 8k or you want to run itr or ctr cams, you need to upgrade your valvetrain to at least ITR valvetrain or aftermarket. You may get away with it for xx amount of months, but valve float is going to happen.
My point is, if you don't want to change out the pistons just yet, run nothing but stock B16 or GSR cams. Nothing else. If you want to run ITR/CTR cams, then you must upgrade the valvetrain. Even at that point, there is so little room to adjust the cams, that there's no point in even installing them. Don't waste your time.

So IMO, here's what you need to do:

Either...

1. Leave the cams and pistons stock.

2. Change the pistons for aftermarket. RS Machines makes GREAT oem style cast pistons for the B20. Once you do that, you're good to go with just about any damn cam setup you want.

FYI, cast pistons in the same size compression ratio of any aftermarket forged piston will make more power. This is due to the expansion rate of oem pistons as compared to forged pistons. Rebuilds are necessary sooner when using forged pistons as the rings and cylinder walls accumulate more abuse because of this.

Another con of aftermarket forged pistons is their surface finish. They are generally "shiny", which is counter-productive for the transfer of thermal energy.

I know these are some advanced ideas, but if you stick your nose into a book about thermodynamics, you'll understand.

Go with some RS machines pistons, then upgrade your valvetrain and cams at the same time or at a later time (whatever your budget permits). You'll be looking at 40-60 more whp over the stock b20vtec setup with just these simple upgrades.

well, my bad i guess to me (at least) it seemed that this thread sorta kinda drifted OT from p2v clearence anyway, so i figured i'd just ask if it would prolong the life of the bottom end.

i'm putting a b16a2 head on a b20, ctr cams, omnipower VT, and really don't plan on revving past 8k-8.5k (8.5k being the absolute max). i wasn't planning on upgrading pistons until i've gone over this thread. i figured that a block guard would pretty much help, but am hesistating, due to the fact that i've heard many poor things about the stock pistons/sleeves.

so it'd be cool if i could get my question asked properly now i guess will a block guard be effective in aiding my pistons, or will revving as high as i want to rev make it necessary to upgrade?

pull your head after a month (((if it last that long ))) ill bet you $100.00 that your valves are taping your pistons
