smoking problem...need HELP!!!!
ok so ive got a 2000 integra type r and driving around it smokes a little bit but when i get on it it smokes horribly especially when i hit vtec....at first we thot it wus the head gasket, which was bad, but anyways when we took the head off the valves on the number 1 cylinder oil was baked on them bad enough to where we could chip the oil off...but the piston head was clean and the other 3 were a little blackened...and the compression checked good on all cylinders at 180 and the number 1 was 152 but slowly dropped down...everyone ive talked to seems to think that all my problems with the smoking has to do with the valves not sealing like at all on that cylinder...and possibly the head a little warped....any ideas and or suggestions??????
your compression is too low thats for sure. the 180 is even a little lower but your 1 cylinder is 150 thats too much of a difference. The smoking could be valve stem seals but most likely its your rings. I know that valve stem seals will smoke after being idled and giving the car gas. Thats how it is with DSM's but, either way both things could be making it smoke alot. How much oil do you burn on a weekly basis? Does it smoke or burn oil even when you dont beat on the car?
The head will not warp unless the engine has had some serious over-heating issues in the past. Or you or someone dropped it on a hard surface.
For future reference when you are checking compression, if you get a cylinder that reads significantly lower than the others, take a table spoon of motor oil and poor it down the spark plug hole, and re check the compression. If the compression reads higher, then the rings are shot or failing. If the compression reads the same, then it is more than likely your valve stem seals.
A healthy engine should have 3-5% max variance between cylinders when performing a compression or leak down test.

In am in the same boat as you. I smoke so much that when I hit vtec my cars disappears with its ninja cloud. Replace the rings and send the head out to a machine shop.

It might be a combination of both. But when I see "smoking in VTEC" I think rings.
When I see smoke on decel, I think valve seals.
Regardless, that motor needs some love... compression is low.

I was about to post the same problem and concern regarding my motor...
With the motor in this condition, would I be able to drive Seattle to LA?
This is a serious question, because an emergency came up and after calculating costs, I'll most likely drive.
Not stealing your post, but since I'm on the same boat and have a situation on my hands; thought I'd ask.
Seattle to LA one-way: roughly 1150 miles - leave Thursday evening, return saturday afternoon.

Check your oil at every fill up.
Mine lasted from 80-130K miles with this problem, but i checked the oil every day.
It was using 1QT every 150 miles or so toward 130k

so true.. my buddy swore up and down it was his rings he later found out it was only the valve seals

if your gonna do the rings you got the head off do the valve seals as well.
b series that smoke in vtec from what ive seen is from the rings going on its way out. you could still make great compression with a bad oil ring so you know
